Job Description

The Traffic Management Division has an engineer position. This division oversees the maintenance and operations of over 760 traffic signals, 470 flashing beacons, 450 CCTV cameras, 950 communication switches, and 300 miles of fiberoptic cable. This position will be a critical member of the Traffic Management Systems section, assisting with the growth and maintenance of ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) infrastructure through plan, equipment submittal, and field review and coordination with consultants, developers, and contractors.  In addition, the engineer will help manage and operate the Traffic Control Center (TCC) by assisting analysts with monitoring traffic conditions and adjusting signal timings. The engineer will also be an integral member of the collaborative team that is deploying Connected Vehicle (CV) applications, including emergency vehicle preemption, transit signal priority, work zone notification, pedestrian presence notification, and railroad preemption notification. The Engineer will help ensure Signal Phasing and Timing (SPaT) and MAP messages are being transmitted and received, along with ingesting and processing CV data. The Engineer will also coordinate with the signal timing team that ensures the CV initiatives are working with the system, along with helping to measure the effectiveness of the system roll-out.
 
Essential Duties

  • Reviewing the ITS aspects of various engineering projects
  • Reviewing project plans for impacts for County ITS infrastructure, compliance with applicable regulations, and adherence to project guidelines
  • Reviewing ITS equipment submittals for compliance with specifications
  • Performing field reviews to ensure work is done according to the work plan
  • Monitoring work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Coordinating with consultants, developers, and contractors
  • Providing technical assistance to other County staff, outside contractors, and the general public regarding project issues 
  • Performing TCC duties, including monitoring traffic, adjusting traffic signal timing, equipment connectivity verification, answering phones, etc
  • Verifying successful deployment of Connected Vehicle (CV) applications, including emergency vehicle preemption, transit signal priority, work zone notification, pedestrian presence notification, and railroad preemption notification
  • Helping to ensure Signal Phasing and Timing (SPaT) and MAP messages are being transmitted and received
  • Assisting with the ingesting and processing of Connected Vehicle data
  • Coordinating with the signal timing team to ensure the CV initiatives are working with the system
  • Overseeing administration of assigned program budget and expenditures 
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level

 
Public Speaking Duties

  •  Ability to communicate effectively and engage with staff, citizens, leadership, and elected officials as needed. 

 Other Job Requirements/Information

  • This job is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule after an initial probationary period and individual approval. 

Grade
The grade for this position is C421, C431, C451, or D611. Salary will be dependent on education and experience.
 
Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.
 
Minimum Qualifications

Engineer I
C42(1) - $60,570 - $99,941

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or anticipate completing that program within the next three months
  • Valid Driver's License 

 
Engineer II
C43(1) - $65,871 - $108,687

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • One year of related experience
  • Valid Driver's License 

 
Engineer III
C45(1) - $77,901 - $128,537

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Two years of progressively responsible engineering experience
  • Valid Driver's License

 
Engineer IV
 D61(1) - $84,719 - $139,786

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • Four years of progressively responsible engineering experience
  • Valid Driver's License 
  • Professional Engineer License may be required based on area of assignment
