Minimum Qualification: A high school Diploma or GED. Must have a valid GA driver’s license. City manager may select candidate for employment based on a combination of education and experience.

 

Meter Reader

Department: Street

Reports to:    Meter reader

FLSA:               Non-Exempt

 

Job Summary: This position is responsible for manual work in assisting the meter reader.

Major Duties:

  • Read Electric and water meters each month
  • Connect and disconnect utilities
  • Report irregularities of meter readings for the necessary servicing departments
  • Report broken water meter lids or issues with electric meters to those servicing departments
  • Load handhelds daily for the route of reading
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

Knowledge Required by the position:

  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of the streets in the city
  • Knowledge of how to read an electric and water meter correctly
  • Knowledge of the handheld system in which to input the reads
  • Knowledge of the route manager software to load and unload handheld
  • Basic computer knowledge in order to print the daily route sheets
  • Ability to interpret instructions and effectively carry them out with general supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with meter reader supervisor, general public, and members of other departments.

 

Supervisory Controls: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Director

 

Guidelines: Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures; city personnel manual

 

Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to provide manual labor in the area of meter reading.

 

Physical Demands: The work is typically performed with the employee standing, walking, bending, crouching and stooping.

 

Work Environment: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, dust, and occasional hot, cold or inclement weather. This work may require the use of protective devices such as gloves, rain coats and boots.
