Listing Summary

This is a predominantly hands-on, detail-oriented position requiring: planting, watering, pruning, mulching, fertilization, mixing soil, repotting, recognition of plant nutrition deficiencies, recognition of pest infestation and damage, removal of plants and other grounds keeper activities. In addition, groundskeepers are responsible for spotting potential dangers around the buildings and other areas. Incumbent must have experience in operating a variety of mechanized garden and landscaping tools, machinery, and equipment, such as weed eaters, trimmers, edgers, chain saws, and pole saws. The incumbent will report to the Director of Cultural Affairs. Minimum Qualifications: • High school diploma or GED equivalent • Five (5) years of residential and/or two (2) years of commercial experience in lawn care • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license Preferred Qualifications: • Knowledge of gardening products such as fertilizers and pesticides • Previous experience working in horticulture and landscape design • Work with minimal supervision and have a strong independent work ethic • Eye for detail Major Duties: • Maintain landscape and garden areas and cultivate ground for foliage • Planting and fertilizing of grass, flowers, shrubbery, and trees • Weeding, pruning, soil conditioning, irrigation, mulching and related tasks • Operating and maintaining garden and landscape equipment, including hand tools and mechanical equipment • Trim and edge sidewalks, curbs, and flower beds • Performs mulch/pine straw application and replacement • Conducts weed eating and weed control • Cuts trees & bushes, including trimming/cutting limbs, and pruning as required • Ordering supplies, communicating with vendors • Pressure washing and outdoor painting • Supervising work of community service workers as they are intennittently available to assist • Designing and implementing projects for landscape maintenance and improvement • Assist with emptying trash receptacles and remove debris from the property daily • Performs other related duties as assigned HR Updated: 03/31/2020 Page 1 of3 Knowledge Required by the Position: • Knowledge of various types of fo liage, flowers, trees, shrubs and other greenery and how to maintain them • Knowledge of the practices and techniques of lawn care and Ground keepers operations • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to the job • Knowledge of basic computer skills Ability Required by the Position: • Ability to exert continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulating and heavy lifting of equipment • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more • Ability to operate lawn maintenance equipment, as listed above • Ability to follow established safety rules, departmental policies and procedures • Ability to work accurately with detailed records and complex information • Ability to understand and fo llow oral and written instructions • Ability to work independently in maintaining a clean and orderly area • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and visitors to the fac ility • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, and other City employees • Ability to work independently • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather • Ability to work rotating weekends Supervisory Controls: Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Cu ltural Affairs Physical Demands: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching, holding equipment over head. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, rain gear, or gloves. Work Environment: The work is performed outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, di1i, grease, machinery with moving pa1is, and cold or inclement weather.
