Work Hours: Full Time 6:00 am – 3:00 pm weekdays
Starting Salary: $12.00 (non-exempt)
Approximately an 8 week program

Job Title – Description & Responsibilities

Crew Worker - Cemetery Operations

This position assists Decatur in managing growth while retaining character by creating a unique and comforting atmosphere for the City of Decatur’s cemetery. Work involves the maintenance, beautification, and operation of the City cemetery through the performance of heavy manual tasks, the safe operation of specialized tools, light equipment in the maintenance of burial plots and preparation of gravesites. Detailed assignments are given by and work is performed under the direct supervision of the Crew Supervisor.

Performs cemetery grounds maintenance work using a variety of specialized tools, light equipment
Operate weed eaters and power trimmers to trim trees and shrubbery and clear areas around markers, trees, or other objects
Irrigate lawn, shrubbery, and plantings; rake and pick up leaves
Dig and close graves using backhoe, pick, and shovel; load, haul, and transport dirt from grave sites using dump truck; prepare forms and pour foundations for grave markers
Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles
Fuel and lubricate equipment; sharpen blades and replace parts
Report any safety hazards or maintenance problems to the Crew Supervisor
Assist the public in finding graves
Perform work as needed or assigned

Crew Worker - Streets

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City streets, sidewalks, and street signage. Work involves the performance of heavy manual tasks and the safe operation of specialized tools. Detailed assignments are given by and work is performed under the direct supervision of the Streets Crew Supervisor or the Senior Engineer.

Operates a variety of specialized power tools and light equipment
Prepares forms, pours and finishes concrete in the repair and installation of sidewalks, curbs, handicap access ramps, driveway aprons, and other similar structures
Performs pothole repairs, asphalt paving, sign installation, and performs basic masonry work in the construction of curbs, sidewalks, retaining walls, and similar structures
Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles
Reports any safety hazards or maintenance problems to the Crew Supervisor

Crew Worker - Ground Maintenance

The Crew Worker is responsible for enhancing the City's unique atmosphere by preserving and maintaining the City landscape. This position assists in creating an inviting environment for the community through landscaping, beautification, and maintenance of the City's parks, right-of-ways, ball fields, and undeveloped lots. Work involves the use of a variety of hand-operated power tools and landscape maintenance equipment. Assignments are given, and work is performed under the direct supervision of the Crew Supervisor.

Performs grounds maintenance work using a variety of specialized tools and light equipment
Operates motorized equipment and tools to perform landscaping work such as planting trees and shrubbery, maintaining lawns and athletic fields, and cleaning up debris and litter
Performs masonry work such as building retaining walls, sidewalks, catch basins, and other similar structures; pouring and finishing concrete; and other related work required to accomplish goals
Repairs and installs fences
Reports any safety hazards or maintenance problems to the Equipment Operator and Crew Supervisor Provides responsive and timely feedback on the status and progress of work assignments to the supervisor and management
Demonstrates a commitment to safety by initiating, suggesting, and adhering to procedures to assure the highest risk management standards, employee safety, and risk avoidance
Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles
Performs other work as needed or assigned

Crew Worker - Drainage

The purpose of this job is to engage in and supports the mission of the Public Works Department through positive reinforcement and consistent application of rules, regulations, and standard operating guidelines. Demonstrates a commitment to safety by initiating, suggesting, and adhering to procedures to assure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety and risk avoidance.

Performs grounds mainten­­­­ance work using a variety of specialized tools and light equipment
Performs masonry work such as building retaining walls, sidewalks, catch basins, and other similar structures; pouring and finishing concrete, and other related work as required to accomplish goals
Reports any safety hazards or maintenance problems to the Equipment Operator and Crew Supervisor
Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles
Performs all other duties as needed or assigned

Crew Worker - Building Maintenance

This position is responsible for clean-up, maintenance and light repair. Performs custodial activities in various City buildings and parks, such as cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, emptying trash cans, sweeping/mopping/vacuuming floors, dusting furniture and emptying recycling bins. Performs other work as needed or assigned.
