Job Summary

To provide assistance in controlling stray, uncontrolled, or abused dogs and cats from undesirable conditions. This includes capture, examination, basic medical treatment, housing, return to owners or placement of animal with new owners, and euthanasia where necessary. This position is responsible for reports to the Animal Shelter Director.

Essential Functions

Capture and remove stray, uncontrolled, or abused animals from undesirable conditions using nets, catch poles, or tranquilizer darts, as necessary.

Euthanize rabid, unclaimed, or severely injured animals.

Examine animals for injuries or malnutrition and arrange for any necessary medical treatment.

Investigate reports of animal attacks or animal cruelty, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and writing reports.

Issue warnings or citations in connection with animal-related offenses or contact the Sheriff's office to report violations and for assistance with criminal investigations.

Remove captured animals from animal control service vehicles and place animals in shelter kennels or other enclosures.

Supply animals with food, water, and personal care, maintain and clean animal kennels and cages, and monitor food and water intake.

Maintain written reports of activities including impoundments and dispositions of animals.

Additional Responsibilities

Assist in educating the public about animal welfare, animal control laws, regulations, and answer inquiries from the public about animal control operations.

Maintain the animal control facilities and office in a healthy and organized manner for safety and efficient workflow.

Other related duties as assigned by the Director of the Animal Shelter or County Administrator.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for Job Performance

Must be Animal Control Certified or pass a National recognized course within 6 months of employment.

1 year of domestic animal experience preferred in either a Shelter or Veterinarian setting.

Must be able to use a microscope to test feces for worms.

Demonstrate effective communication skills.

Must demonstrate ability to operate a tranquilizer gun.

Must be familiar with operation of incinerator.

Enforce and work with law enforcement officers/agencies to administer animal control laws.

Ability to speak and write in the English language.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

This work is often performed at night and does require the willingness and ability to respond as needed. This work often requires capture and confinement of angry animals.

This work requires extraction of reported animals from under houses and other confined spaces.

This work requires the ability to communicate with citizens and explain the legal issues related to animal control.
