POSITION TITLE: Fire Inspector/ Fire and Life Safety Educator FY23-78
DEPARTMENT:    Fire Department
ENTRY SALARY: $24.35 per hour, plus benefits.
JOB SUMMARY: Reviews and analyzes building site plans to determine compliance with codes and
ordinances; receives applications and coordinates plan reviews for small additions, minor alterations, and
repairs of existing structures. Receives and reviews architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, permit
applications, plumbing plans, fire alarm plans, etc. to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. Reads,
interprets, and applies laws and legal documents. Prepares a variety of regular and special reports. Develop
educational and informative fire prevention, injury reduction and life safety programs. Develop, implement,
conduct and evaluate public education programs, lead classes, seminars, theatrical productions, school
presentations and workshops. Produce educational videos to inform the public of fire reduction and
suppression techniques. Prepare, submit, and present press releases and marketing information to the local
media and other outlets to promote education programs, services, and activities. Train individuals involved
in fire safety education as needed including teachers, firefighters, and community volunteers. Coordinate
meetings and training presentations with the public. Serve on a variety of local, state, and national committees
and boards as assigned; build community coalitions to strengthen programs. Prepare a variety of reports
and records to determine community needs and program effectiveness. Locate and acquire sources of funding
for the unit’s programs. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion
of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school
education. Possession of or ability to readily obtain Fire Instructor I, Fire and Life Safety Educator, Juvenile Fire
Setter Intervention Specialist I & II, Fire Inspector I & II, Fire Investigator. Sufficient experience to understand
the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an
apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily
obtain the appropriate state certification for the type of inspection(s) conducted.
