Listing Summary

The City of Norcross is looking to hire for the full-time position of Journeyman Lineman. The purpose of this position is to install, maintain, alter, and repair overhead electrical lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical equipment.

The incumbent in this position will observe applicable safety, health, and environmental rules and guidelines. Responsibilities include but are not limited to constructing and maintaining overhead electrical lines, repairing sagging wires, trimming and/or removing tree limbs from electrical system rights-of-way. The incumbent will also respond to customer service calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, and weather conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Constructs and maintains overhead electrical lines; repairs sagging wires and trims or removes tree limbs from electrical system rights-of-way.
  • Maintains electrical substations, including maintaining breakers, regulators, and switches.
  • Installs and maintains metering.
  • Installs transformers and switches to provide commercial and residential electrical services, including temporary services.
  • Responds to customer service calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, and weather conditions.
  • Remains on call to reconnect water services.
  • Installs and maintains streetlights, including overhead and underground lighting and residential and commercial security lights.
  • Assists with the duties of other departmental utility crews as needed.
  • Attends training school as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED. Two to four years of related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Part 382 – Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • ITS (Integrated Transmission System) certified.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Any other duties as assigned by the Electric Supervisor. Ability to be ‘on-call’ and respond quickly to emergencies and requests from management.

Scope and Impact:

Position installs, maintains, and repairs electrical lines and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the safe, efficient, and effective provision of electrical services. The work consists of varied duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, substations, wires, and cables. The work is made difficult by extreme weather conditions and working with energized conductors.

Communications/Customer Contact:

Contact is typically with co-workers, builders, developers, electricians, property owners, and utility service customers. The nature of the interaction is generally to provide and/or exchange information or restore services.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in overhead and underground utility construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of electrical construction, maintenance and repair practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and occupational hazards in performing line crew operations and maintenance work, as well as applicable electrical and safety codes.
  • Knowledge of City and Department Policies and Procedures.
  • Skill in the use of such tools and equipment as chippers, chainsaws, backhoes, trenchers, and compression tools.
  • Skill in working with high voltage electrical lines.
  • Skill in operating bucket and line trucks.
  • Skill in utilizing a line locator, fault locator, recording voltage meter, and other specialized tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: starting at $57,359 (minimum) up to 74,567 (midpoint) based upon qualifications/experience
