Police Chief

City of Chamblee, GA

Listing Summary

Located just 14 miles from downtown Atlanta, Georgia, the City of Chamblee is a vibrant urban community with diverse residents and cultural flair. From international cuisine and a budding art scene to affordable living, engaged leadership, and ever-expanding entertainment amenities, it’s no wonder this 7-square-mile city can boast community feel and global appeal. Once a small rail town incorporated in 1908, the City grew through multiple annexations and is now home to over 30,000 residents nestled in northern DeKalb County, bordered by Dunwoody to the northwest, Doraville to the east, and Brookhaven to the southwest.

Proudly serving a vibrant community, the Chamblee Police Department responds to calls for law enforcement services, enforces all state and local laws and ordinances, protects life and property, investigates matters of a criminal nature, preserves the peace, and strives to prevent crime and disorder. The department’s 86 employees, including 69 sworn officers, are guided by the ordinances enacted by the City of Chamblee, the laws of the State of Georgia, and the Constitution of the United States of America. Under the direction of the City Manager, the Police Chief manages, plans, and directs all activities, operations, and personnel of the Chamblee Police Department in order to enforce the federal, state, and municipal laws and ordinances in the prevention of crime and protection of life and property.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, police administration, or a related field from an accredited four-year university, with a master’s degree preferred. Candidates should also have at least 12 years of law enforcement experience, including five in a senior management role. Graduation from the FBI Academy, Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Program, or Command Officer Development Program are highly desired, and any specialized police leadership and management training in ethics and integrity, emergency management, cultural and generational diversity, problem-solving, or community policing is a plus. Experience in providing upper-level leadership in a department of comparable size and complexity to the Chamblee Police Department is required, with significant leadership in a department accredited by CALEA or a state accreditation agency for at least two consecutive accreditation periods strongly preferred. The ideal candidate also has experience securing substantial federal resources. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is preferred. Any combination of related education and experience that demonstrates the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the position’s essential duties may be considered. The selected candidate must also have or obtain the Georgia P.O.S.T. Peace Officer certification within six months of hire and a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Please also note that although residency is not required, the selected candidate will need to live within a reasonable driving distance of the City limits. The city provides an $800 per month incentive to live within the city limits.

The City of Chamblee is offering a salary range of $117,363 to $175,905 for this position, depending on experience and qualifications.
