JOB SUMMARY

This position operates a truck along an assigned route to collect solid waste.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Operates compactor truck in the collection of solid waste along an assigned route.
  • Operates a roll-off truck to collect trash from dumpsters.
  • Conducts pre- and post-operation equipment inspections; performs minor equipment repair and maintenance; reports repair needs to supervisor.
  • Supervises the work of assigned inmate workers; transports inmates to and from prison.
  • Performs related duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of prohibited waste.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned collection vehicles.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Solid Waste Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to operate a truck in the collection of solid waste. Success in this position contributes to the provision of solid waste and recycling services to the public.

 

CONTACTS                                                        

  • Contacts are typically with other county employees, inmates, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to motivate or influence persons, or to resolve problems.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, walking, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • More than one year of related experience required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
