Job Summary: This position performs all equipment operation work in the maintenance of the City’s water distribution and sewer collection system. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment, which reflects a positive image of the Public Works Department and the City of McDonough, and it ensures a clean and safe environment for all customers and citizens. Major Duties & Responsibilities:
 Operates assigned equipment in the maintenance and repair of the City’s water distribution and sewer collection system.
 May operate gasoline and diesel-powered automotive and heavy equipment, light to medium duty trucks, tractors, backhoes, excavators, and various machines, tools and power equipment, and bush hog.
 Performs daily inspections on maintenance vehicles and equipment used on the job, and documents and records of missing equipment and/or needed repairs.
 Checks and maintains equipment, trucks, trailers, and power tools.
 Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc., on job site(s).
 Operates City vehicles and equipment in the performance of duties.
 Responds to and participates in emergency and stand-by calls on a 24-hour basis.
 Works with crews to properly secure work zone(s) with proper signage and precautions.
 Assists in other areas of water distribution and sewer collections as needed and assigned by the Water Distribution supervisor or designee.
 Assists with other departments as requested and needed.
 Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
 Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with operation of equipment.
 Knowledge of City of McDonough of policies and departmental policies and procedures.
 Knowledge of State Motor Vehicles Laws.
 Knowledge of geographical layout of the City of McDonough.
 Skill in proper operation and basic repair of machinery and trucks used in assigned section.
 Ability to recognize hazardous materials and situations and respond according to training and City policies and procedures.
 Ability to respond to system emergencies as needed per department assignments.
 Ability to operate equipment and perform duties under a variety of weather conditions.
 Ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.
 Ability to maintain all required licenses and certifications.
 Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment in a safe manner.
 Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the general public.
Education & Certification(s):
 High School diploma or GED equivalent.
 One (1) to two (2) years related position experience.
 Valid State of Georgia Class C license with Class B preferred or the ability to obtain Class B within six (6) months of employment.
 Water Distribution and Sewer Collection licenses preferred or the ability to obtain Water and Sewer certifications within twenty-four months of employment.
 Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.
 Ability to successfully pass a credit & criminal background check, employment physical, and drug and alcohol test.

 Must be dependable, honest, and trustworthy.
 Must be punctual with a commitment to attendance.
 Ability to work with supervision and follow directions both orally and in writing.
 Able to work well with co-workers, public utility workers and the general public.
Physical Requirements:
 This work is typically performed outdoors with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, carrying pulling, balancing, kneeling, or stooping and may require physical exertion over moderately long periods of time.
 Work may require the employee to lift light to moderately heavy objects and use equipment requiring average physical agility and a high degree of dexterity.
 The employee must be able to maneuver in confined spaces.
Environmental Conditions:
 Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and possible sustained periods in hot, cold, or inclement weather.
 Work may require use of protective devices such as gloves and safety jackets.
