Salary: $56,676 
MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Juris Doctorate; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training that includes litigation and criminal law experience. Must possess and maintain valid membership in the Georgia Bar Association, court of Appeals of the State of Georgia, and Supreme Court of the State of Georgia.

NATURE OF WORK: The purpose of this classification is to evaluate criminal cases that come into the office, and to represent the state in the resolution of the case via dismissal, plea negotiations or trial.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Drafts accusations and indictments; evaluates and researches potential defenses; dismisses cases not prosecutable; reads cases submitted by investigator; reads police reports; determines whether further investigation is needed; approves or returns cases for more work; researches alternative crimes; reads and researches case law; presents cases to grant jury; questions witnesses; answers jurors questions; determines appropriate sentence recommendations; calls arraignment calendars; attends pre-trial conferences with judge and defense attorneys; complies with discovery requirements by copying and mailing documents; works with trial team investigators to coordinate witnesses and evidence for trials; gathers and labels evidence; negotiates pleas to dispose of cases; interviews witnesses, victims, experts and the police; questions potential jurors and selects jury; arranges interpreter services for witnesses when necessary; develops trial strategy for each case; organizes opening and closing arguments; presents evidence at trial; consults with supervisors about trial strategy; fills out jury cards; reads appellate briefs and case transcripts; researches and writs responses to briefs; represents state in probation revocation hearings; responds to parole notices; handles telephone calls from attorneys; witnesses and concerned citizens; determines appropriate bond amounts; attends meetings, maintains continuing education requirements; speaks to reporters on various cases; supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processes employee concerns and problems, directs work, counsels and completes employee performance appraisals. Performs other related duties as required. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. SELECTION PROCEDURE: Selection will be made from a register of eligible applicants that may be established by education, work experience, test score, personal interview, credit check, criminal history, driving history (copy of driver’s license may be required), drug screen, and/or physical examination.
