Risk Management Specialist

Performs a variety of highly responsible, confidential and complex technical and specialized administrative duties to support the Risk Management function.

Participates as assigned in safety, workers' compensation, property claims, liability claims adjustment and other loss control programs to fulfill the City's overall Risk Management objectives. 
Provides assistance to Risk Manager, other City personnel, and the public regarding liability claims, workers' compensation and safety programs.
Assists with the administration of the workers compensation program by coordinating claims administration with our third-party administrator.
Assists the Risk Manager in processing and submitting liability and automobile claims against the City.
Assists the Risk Manager in implementing City-wide safety compliance activities and monitoring safety related losses in the City.
Responds to routine inquiries from employees, supervisors, adjusters and physicians.
Prepares schedules, serves and supports, as needed, the safety and accident review committee meetings.
Assists the Risk Manager in identifying or coordinating safety training and serves as secondary contact for safety training.
Prepares reports, spreadsheets, graphs and other claims or training summaries.
Verifies insurance requirements associated with City contracts.
Assists with coordination of safety initiatives to include proactive facility audits and related employee recognitions or safety celebrations.
Provides clerical support, prepares, composes, distributes and files letters, reports, forms, purchase orders, safety bulletins, recognitions and other documents.
Provides assistance to Risk Manager and other HR personnel with special projects as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Associates degree in Management, Human Resources, Risk Management, or related field preferred.
Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office applications including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
Two years of recent, full-time increasingly specialized administrative experience, preferably in an insurance environment. (Knowledge of basic insurance, workers' compensation, training, medical and legal terms helpful) 
Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of standard practices in Human Resources related to risk management and safety.
Skill in preparing, organizing and maintaining files, reports and records of a confidential nature.
Ability to manage several projects simultaneously with high degree of accuracy, diplomacy, and proficiency.
Ability to work with limited supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional service providers, public officials, City management, and employees of all levels.
Ability to exercise independent judgment; interpret information and formulate action steps.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to conduct or facilitate training and educational programs related to risk management and safety.
Ability to motivate and encourage others to maintain a safe working environment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise tact and diplomacy.
