               Public Works - Laborer I – $10.50/hour

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Uses hand tools, cleans, sweeps, and performs basic maintenance tasks (e.g. cleans, oils, fuels and greases equipment, etc.)
  • Performs a variety of horticultural task (e.g. mowing, mulching, weed whacking, tree trimming, etc.).
  • Picks up and delivers mail, supplies and equipment.
  • Locates and removes refuse from County property or County Right-of-Way.
  • Operates a pick-up truck and a truck with a plow.
  • Assists higher level maintenance staff at job sites (e.g. shoveling, digging, loading and unloading).
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Adjust work assignments and schedules in the event of an emergency to assist in emergency preparedness, response and recovery.
  • Depending on assignment may require emergency management training, licensure and/or certification.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the Public Works Department.

Education and Experience

·High School diploma or equivalent. 

·Must possess and maintain in good standing a valid Driver’s License.

·Completion of approved DOT Flagging class.


  • Knowledge of proper use, handling and care of small tools and equipment used for the position.
  • Able to safely lift heavy objects.
  • Able to properly operate hand tools and non-complex motorized equipment.
  • Able to drive light duty pickup truck.
  • Able to apply acquired knowledge of procedures, rules, regulations and services applicable to the assigned office.
  • Able to listen to, understand and follow verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Able to effectively work in all weather conditions.
  • Able to multi-task.
  • Able to communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public.
  • Able to consistently walk, use hands and arms to operate tools, and to lift and/or move a minimum of 80 pounds.
