Part-Time Emergency Management Specialist

Purpose of Position:  

The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Emergency Management with planning, organizing, and deployment of local Emergency Management activities; coordinates Emergency Management programs/ activities associated with preparation for, response to, and recovery from natural or manmade disasters or emergencies affecting lives and property of citizens. This position will assist with the planning and development of an effective Emergency Management Program as required by Federal, State and local statutes and include additional tasks as assigned by the Director of Emergency Management.   

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  

  • Aids in the planning, coordination, and preparation of responses and recovery actions for potential emergencies or disasters.

     

  • Plans for the evacuations of citizens and the utilization of city, county, state and federal resources in the event of a large-scale emergency or disaster.

     

  • Must be familiar with policies and procedures of the Federal, State and Local Homeland Security Department.

     

  • Must be familiar with NIMS (National Incident Management System) and capable of maintaining compliance records.

  • Must be capable of Incident Command during an accident or incident which involves much stress and pressure.

     

  • Must be capable of planning for protective actions for the preservation of life and property

     

  • Must be able to operate and have basic knowledge of radio communications and capable or operating software such as CODE RED weather reporting alerting system

     

  • Prepares various federal and state reports as well as other emergency planning documentation. Experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint.

     

  • Assists or compiles preliminary damage assessment reports for submission to GEMA and FEMA.

     

  • Attends required State GEMA/FEMA specialized courses, training and participates in area meeting and drills.

     

  • Must be able to travel to training, conventions, and meetings several times a year.

     

  • Must be able to plan Public Information Events such as Tradeshows, Public Awareness Events and Campaigns, and General Information Exhibits. Plans, schedules and carries out educational programs for the general public, school systems, businesses, and industries etc.

     

  • Must be able to assist with Grant Preparation related to Public Safety.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

 

Preferred Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management, Fire Science, or related field with a minimum of three to five years of emergency management or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
