The City of Chamblee, Georgia is seeking a Chief of Police. Chamblee is home to more than 30,000 residents. Located within the Metro Atlanta region, the city encompasses seven square miles inside the I-285 perimeter, is home to the Chamblee MARTA station and is bordered by two of the most traveled arteries in the southeast – I-285 and I-85. Chamblee is also home to the DeKalb Peachtree Airport (PDK), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Internal Revenue Service. Chamblee has seen explosive growth in the last decade. This growth was fueled by two annexations as well as an effort by the city to create more dense development around the MARTA station. As a result of this growth, the city was recently named the fifth fastest growing city in the US with a population under 100,000.
The Police Chief directs, plans and coordinates all operations of the department, including court, confiscated assets, E911 and criminal history divisions. The position is responsible for managing the administrative functions of the department, such as developing policies and procedures, formulating long range plans and preparing the budget. Additionally, the Police Chief is responsible for overseeing all matters related to police services; planning and implementing comprehensive community policing, law enforcement and public safety programs. The successful candidate will be expected to act as a change agent who can articulate a vision of excellence, establish credibility and consistency in delivery of police services, and motivate others to embrace important cultural diversity within the Police Department and the community. Other important qualifications include:
- Bachelor's Degree required in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Police Administration or similar degree; Master’s Degree preferred; with five years of experience in upper level police management; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Certified by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) or be able to obtain certification during the first six months after appointment. Must process a valid driver's license.
- Graduate of the FBI Academy; or the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Program or Command Officer Development Program highly desired; comparable specialized police leadership and management training in ethics and integrity, emergency management, cultural and generational diversity, problem solving, and community policing will be considered.
- Experience in providing upper level leadership in a police department that is comparable in size and complexity to the Chamblee Police Department is required. Significant leadership role in a department that has been accredited by CALEA or state accreditation agency for at least two consecutive accreditation periods is highly desired; experience in securing substantial federal resources is desired.
Salary for this position DOQ of the selected candidate is expected to be in the range of $120,000 - $140,000 with a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement options including 10% contribution to employee’s 401k, paid time off, and negotiable relocation expenses.
