Summary: This position is responsible for performing,remodeling/construction work, and building systems to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the public. This position will be assigned mechanical inspection duties.
Essential Job Functions:
Interprets and enforces construction codes and related ordinances with specific emphasis given to the Standard Building Code and the CABO one and two family dwelling code. Reviews building plans, architectural drawings, electrical drawings, final plans and other construction plans. Determines whether buildings pass or fail inspections. Identifies code deficiencies, hazardous conditions, structural failures, or improper uses; recommends corrective actions; reports violations and variations from codes/plans; issues stop work orders as appropriate. Prepares and maintains accurate records of inspection activities. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, inspection reports or other documents. Coordinates inspection activities with other departments, other inspectors, property owners, contractors and other individuals. Operates a variety of tools associated with work activities, which may include a motor vehicle, electric circuit testing instruments, shovel, hand tools, ladder, transit, measuring devices, calculator, computer and general office equipment. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable codes, regulations and standards. Performs other duties as required.
High school diploma or GED supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in general building construction, construction trades and a variety of building inspection specialties and three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes general building construction, construction trades, code enforcement/interpretation, and a variety of building inspection specialties. Must be able to able to read and interpret manuals, codes, rules and regulations. Must have the ability to prepare reports and correspondence. Must have the ability to make public presentations. Must have the ability to perform the required mathematical calculations.Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain valid SBCCI Building Inspector Certification. Must possess and maintain valid SBCCI Certification in appropriate specialties for types of inspections performed, such as plumbing inspector, mechanical inspector, electrical inspector, coastal construction inspector, building plan examiner, and/or other specialized area of inspection.
