This position is responsible for developing and executing a community-based vision that promotes arts, culture and history throughout Savannah, embraces a diverse local community, fosters partnerships and collaboration with local, regional and national arts, history and cultural organizations, and outreaches and engages segments of the population with limited exposure and financial means to participate in enrichment activities.

Essential Job Functions

Oversees the planning and implementation of art, music, performance, literature, and related cultural programs.

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; handles employee concerns and problems; directs work; counsels and disciplines staff; completes employee performance appraisals; recruits, appoints, and trains staff.

Develops the annual administrative, capital improvement, and contributions budgets; establishes revenues projections, service changes, and efficiency measures; reviews and approves department expenditures, requests for payments, contracts for services, payment schedules, and financial compliance.

Serves as the City's chief spokesperson on subjects of arts and history initiatives to the media, at public assemblies, and to the City Council.  Advocate for resources and partnerships to support programs among art and cultural institutions, public and private organizations, governmental entities, donors, community organizations and the general public

Represents the city's cultural sector through participation with state, local, national, and international cultural exchanges, presentations, award applications, and conferences.  Remain informed of local, regional and national ideas, trends, and concerns that relate to arts, culture, history, and archives/records management.

Prepares and directs the preparation of a variety of reports related to cultural arts, records & historical resources and the department's operations.

Directs the work of staff and professional support for inclusion in committees, task forces, projects, boards, and special projects to place ensure arts, cultural and historical initiatives are included in city-wide planning processes.
Develops, establishes, and implements policies and procedures for all department and center operations.

Coordinates and facilitates the efforts of the Cultural Affairs Commission in funding decisions and policy review.  Provides non-profit financial training and review of city policies and ordinances to assist with funding recommendations.

Meets with individuals and groups to establish plans, logistics, and collaborations.  Develops community contacts and foster successful partnerships that engage the local and national arts community, students, churches, small and large performance groups, volunteers and other organizations in providing a robust cultural enrichment program.

Manages daily operations of the Savannah Cultural Arts Center.  Oversees all aspects of facility and event management, including promoting and managing facility rentals, exhibit/events management, vendor relations, box office operations, educational programming, standard safety protocols, emergency management, and building/event security. Collaborates with the Civic Center Ticketing Office as needed regarding performance/event ticketing

Promote art, culture and history through classes, workshops, festivals and special events, including creating, designing and producing events to showcase the wide variety of creative talent and opportunities available locally.  Ensures the learning environment appeals to all types of learners and develops their interests at levels that work best for them.

Develops and coordinates a comprehensive communication and engagement strategy; including marketing and promotional materials, such as brochures, newsletters or press releases, internet based/social media communications and other outreach methods to reach a diverse, multi-cultural and multi-generational population.
Expand resources to support department programs and initiatives through grants, sponsorships, partnerships and other resources.  Energize and lead partnership and resource building programs, increasing individual, corporate, and foundation support. 

Manages contracts and reviews the work product of others to ensure compliance with standard operation procedures and standards to maintain quality service levels.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in Arts Administration; with five years of progressively responsible experience in arts administration and events/facility management.  Demonstrated experience in cultural promotion and working knowledge of the Arts including fine arts, theatre, dance, music; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Must possess a valid driver's license.  Web and graphic design skills a plus.
