The Department

The Office of the City Clerk is responsible for keeping an accurate record and minutes of all meetings of the City Council. The City Clerk's responsibilities also include maintenance of contracts, ordinances, resolutions and agreements and oversight of the adoption and publication of the City's Code of Ordinances. Open record requests, in accordance with Georgia's Open Records Act, are submitted to the Office of City Clerk

  
The Position
Per Article III, Section 3.13 of the City of Canton Charter, “the City Clerk shall keep a journal of the proceedings of the City Council; shall maintain in a safe place all records and documents pertaining to the affairs of the City; and shall perform such duties as may be required by law or ordinance or as the City Council may direct.”

Duties may include, but are not limited to: Attends City Council meeting activities; collects and organizes agenda items; prepares agendas and meeting notices; attends all meetings and work sessions, recording minutes of said events; finalizes ordinances and resolutions for the record; ensures publication of minutes, ordinances and resolutions; responds to open records request from the public and attorneys; organizes and maintains City records; advertises, schedules and qualifies candidates for elections; assists the Mayor and Council with registration for training and travel associated with their job functions; provides knowledgeable assistance to the Mayor and Council in understanding how to complete all reports required of elected officials to the state, and files such reports and affidavits for said officials as allowed by law, including Campaign Financial Reporting documents; daily supervision provided by the City Manager.

Starting Annual Salary for this position is $56,635.08 dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Two to three years of clerical, record keeping experience.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Georgia Municipal Clerk certification.
  • Notary or the ability to become a notary.
