ENTRY SALARY:  $24.37 per hour, plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the investigation of assigned criminal cases to determine the nature of criminal activity, to prevent or solve crimes, and to identify and apprehend offenders. Assembles, maintains, and updates case files; reviews and analyzes reports of preliminary investigations; investigates illegal activity; conducts searches of property; operates surveillance, communications, and computer equipment; maintains related records and documentation; gathers, secures, analyzes, and preserves evidence; works with informants; interviews witnesses and victims; builds cases against offenders through the development of case information; makes arrests; interviews and interrogates suspects; prepares and serves warrants; investigates jail incidents. Collects and preserves physical evidence; photographs crime scenes and evidence; records video and audio surveillance; maintains criminal evidence and property rooms; reviews and evaluates crime, medical, and laboratory reports; performs forensic exams on electronic devices. Participates in various meetings, training activities, and seminars. Prepares and delivers school crime safety presentations. Investigates and apprehends persons suspected of illegal sale or use of narcotics; maintains surveillance to determine modus operandi; obtains police funds to make purchase; prepares written reports and evidence to the Magistrate Court to authorize search warrants or taps; observes and photographs narcotics purchases; arrests offenders; obtains statements; testifies in court. Investigates and apprehends persons suspected of child abuse, including child abuse related to pornography. Conducts criminal background investigations. Performs related law enforcement tasks as assigned. Receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Completes a variety of forms and reports; maintains files and records. Performs forensic examinations of computer operation systems, cell phones, and close circuit television systems; assists with criminal investigations by retrieving stored data from computers; provides technical assistance and training on computer forensic issues; testifies in court; participates in the Internet Safety Program. Supervises and directs personnel at crime scenes; assists in inter-agency investigations; serves as Field Training Officer for newly assigned Investigators. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
