JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to support the city in ensuring the safety of all pool patrons at the city’s three public swimming pools.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:      

  • Responsible for all seasonal part-time and volunteer staff.
  • Maintains staff rotations and breaks.
  • Maintains discipline at the facility.
  • Makes decisions regarding refusal and removal of patrons with health problems, intoxication, bathing attire, and behavioral and disciplinary issues.
  • Assigns duties to lifeguards.
  • Ensures all policies, rules, and regulations are enforced by staff and followed by participants.
  • Schedules weekly staff in-service training and documents all training.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the facility.
  • Ensures pool is properly staffed and clean at all times.
  • Responsible for maintaining proper water chemistry at all times.
  • Responsible for checking and maintaining all equipment at the facility.
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory of pool/ facility supplies.
  • Prepares reports as needed.
  • Makes and records daily deposits.
  • Evaluates the performance of staff members.
  • Responsible for teaching lessons and leadership courses.
  • Handles grievances of staff members.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Must have a valid and current Lifeguard Training Certification by the start of the season. A water safety instructor certification is preferred.
  • Must have one (1) year of lifeguard experience and previous cash-handling experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in swimming abilities and the ability to handle rescue activities while in the water.
  • The nature of the job demands that the employee be able to identify problems either visually or by auditory means in order to be alert to life-saving needs.


 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic lifeguard skills/duties.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry.
  • Skill in teaching swimming classes.
  • Ability to demonstrate swimming proficiency.
  • Ability to handle rescue activities.
  • Be able to identify problems either visually or by auditory means in order to be alert to life-saving needs.
  • Good customer service and people skills.
  • Basic computer skills.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounter while performing the essential duties of this job. Requires the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; must be flexible and able to adapt to frequent changes in work priorities. Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of sit or stand for prolonged periods, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crawl and crouch; make precise and coordinated finger, hand and limb movement; maintain uniform, controlled hand-arm posture or movement; push, pull or drag an adult (averaging 160 pounds); lift and carry all sort of items (average 50 pounds); work efficiently for long periods of time.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:      

The employee will perform duties in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential duties may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, bright/dim lights, wildlife and water hazards.
