The Public Works Director is the administrative head of the city’s Street Division, Cemetery Division, and Sanitation Divisions. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and supervising subordinates engaged in construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm sewers and drains, catch basins, and related facilities and appurtenances; planning, assigning, and supervising the garbage, bulk trash, yard debris, and recycling collection and related activities, and the maintenance and upkeep of the City’s Cemeteries. Work involves planning, assigning, and supervising the maintenance and improvements for all public spaces maintained by the City, including rights-of-way, city parks, and city owned properties. Work is performed with considerable independence as to methods and procedures of operation. Work involves responsibility for the proper care, operation and maintenance of equipment including trucks, light and heavy construction equipment; and providing technical advice and assistance on difficult and unusual problems, while ensuring operations conform to engineering standards. Work is performed under general administrative direction of the City Manager and is reviewed through inspections, reports, and conferences. The position is a “department head” as referenced in the city’s personnel rules and regulations and for the purpose of determining the fringe benefits available and any other benefits allowed.  This is an exempt position and may require work outside of normal business hours.

Applicant must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, Construction Management, Public Administration or closely related field supplemented by five (5) years previous experience and/or training that includes progressively responsible public works engineering, road/drainage project coordination, construction management, traffic/transportation planning, project management, budget administration, and management/supervision; OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. A CDL license is preferred, but not required.

Salary range is $77,786 - $120,569 based on experience along with an extensive fringe benefit package.  Health insurance coverage is provided for the employee at no cost as well as a fully funded pension plan.
