This position prunes and removes trees to protect the electric utility system.

Position Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Climbs trees using climbing tools or ladders; operates buckets or extended truck booms to access trees.
  • Hoists tools and equipment with rope or block and tackle equipment.
  • Prunes or removes trees as directed.
  • Removes broken limbs from utility lines; trims and reshapes trees.
  • Loads debris and refuse onto trucks and hauls away for disposal.
  • Operates shredding and chipping equipment.
  • Operates boom trucks, loader, stump chippers, tractors, power saws, and other equipment and tools.
  • Cleans, sharpens, and lubricates equipment.
  • Clears rights-of-way of herbaceous materials.
  • Inspects trees to identify disease or pest problems.
  • Assists with storm clean-up.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of tree management and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices to include Electric Cities of Georgia guidelines and American Public Power Association safety manuals.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of equipment, including a bucket truck and chainsaw.
  • Skill at performing work while at elevated heights.
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Tree Trimmer Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include traffic laws, employee safety standards, OSHA guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related tree maintenance duties. Inclement field conditions contribute to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to maintain and remove trees. Successful performance in this position contributes to the safety of the public and to the provision of quality electric utilities to customers.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, vendors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold, hot, or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. The work is performed at elevated heights.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
