Job Description Summary

This position supports the City of Sandy Springs Traffic Management Center (TMC) operate and maintain the city's traffic management system in a state of good repair in close coordination with the TMC Operations Manager, transportation staff, and City Contractors.

The City’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) includes 132 traffic signals, 43 miles of aerial and underground communications fiber, 116 CCTV cameras, 72 Blue tooth travel time devices, 160 Glance devices, 27 vehicle approach warning flashers, 50 radar speed feedback signs, and associated devices. 

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. 

  • Works closely with the TMC Operations Manager in the day-to-day operation of the TMC.
  • Monitor signal operations and identify malfunctions in the advanced traffic management system (ATMS).
  • Ability to program traffic signal controllers.
  • Operate and maintain signal timing plans.
  • Operate and maintain a complex communications fiberoptic network.
  • Test hardware, peripherals and associated traffic equipment.
  • Provide field switch architecture, configuration, installation, diagnostics, backup/recovery, and monitoring.
  • Document installation of field network devices and peripheral equipment.
  • Ensure that equipment/systems are running current software versions.
  • Mentor ITS technicians on installation and maintenance of peripheral equipment.
  • Support maintenance and operations of the SCOOT adaptive signal program.
  • Provides customer service investigation and response.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment to complete a multitude of tasks.
  • Performs a variety of tasks and a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Additional Functions: 

  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Position requires after hours on-call support and emergency operations support, including holidays and special events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in traffic engineering/traffic operations with electronic control as primary task
  • Minimum Associate degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering Technology or demonstrated equivalent, combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience.
  • Must pass post-offer background check and drug screen.

Specific License or Certification Required:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. 
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Levels I and II certification 

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: 

  • Working knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Devices (MUTCD) .
  • Read and interpret plans and scaled drawings.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical wiring and principles, both AC and DC.
  • Knowledge of electronic traffic control devices, NEMA, and CalTrans spec hardware.
  • Knowledge of a full scope of field construction concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of a variety of office equipment and skill in personal computer operation, specifically, office-oriented applications and custom applications related to the management of traffic control systems (may include MS Excel, MS Word, Customer Service database).
  • Skill in communication, both verbally and in written form.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training.
  • Experience in configuring and maintaining optimized streaming video protocols on various platforms.
  • Experience in estimating and scheduling own work under minimal supervision.
  • Proven track record of resolving all assigned issues in accordance with established service level agreements.
  • Experience documenting configurations/processes/troubleshooting efforts.
  • Prior experience working in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must pass post offer background check and drug screen.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Performs duties in a combination of outside work and an office environment. Job requires employee to perform duties at a job site; at times working alone and at times working very closely with others.
  • Requires outside work, subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions. May be exposed to commonly encountered chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke, and gases found in any around construction sites and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the use of both eyes and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all safety policies and must be willing to report and/or act on safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Must be able to move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in medium to heavy work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to 75 pounds. Tasks may involve balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, kneeling, reaching, repetitive motions, standing, stooping, walking, and extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. 

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed outside, and subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions. Incumbents may be exposed to commonly encountered chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke, and gases found in and around construction sites and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces.

Schedule

  • Normal workday is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday
  • Position requires Public Works on-call, after-hours, weekends, and holiday.
