POSITION SUMMARY     

Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator and Site Supervisor. The Camp Counselor will assist with the planning, organization, supervision, and implementation of a daily activity schedule for camp participants. This is a temporary position, teaching, instructing and leading recreational activities, events and programs. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Developing and leading daily activities with campers ranging from indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, swimming, arts, and crafts that relate to the theme of the week.
  • Monitor lunch and snacks with campers.
  • Providing positive and thorough interaction between parents and staff.
  • Communicating regularly with other Camp Counselors, Site Supervisor, Program Coordinator, and Recreation staff to ensure camp runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • Always Overseeing the enforcement of camp rules.
  • Responsible for campers on field trips, at the aquatic center, and at various locations.
  • Completing accurate accident, behavior, and/or discipline reports. 
  • Rendering first aid in cases of minor injuries.
  • Assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs.
  • Participates at in-service training as required; participates in weekly staff meetings.
  • Organizes and maintains all equipment and supplies.
  • Perform regular visual inspections of camp equipment and notify the supervisor of defective equipment.
  • Performs related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum sixteen (16) years of age or high school graduate or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma, and a minimum of six (6) months of experience volunteering, teaching, leading, or instructing children in an organized recreational or a childcare setting, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. 

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

Must have a valid and current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid upon date of hire.

  • Ability to develop and implement summer camp activities and programs.
  • Ability to develop and teach educational programs for various age groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with persons of varying ages and abilities, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to effectively work with and to secure the confidence and cooperation of participants, the general public, and other employees in recreational activities.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and coordinate the work of contract and temporary employees in recreational activities.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must conform to grooming and dress codes
  • Work requires the ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals, including but not limited to: household cleaning and maintenance chemicals.
  • While performing the duties of this job, work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, and biting insects/invertebrates.

May work an adjusted schedule for assisting in events occurring after 5:00 p.m. such as meetings, or planned events.
