Position Summary
This position is responsible for the processing, storage, and recording of forensic evidence and property.

Position Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Receives, processes, evaluates, documents, and safely and securely stores evidence and property.
  • Maintains evidence records to document chain-of-custody.
  • Prepares court orders for the disposal, destruction, or retention of property in accordance with state laws.
  • Packages and prepares evidence for shipping to crime lab for testing.
  • Prepares asset forfeiture documents for civil action filings.
  • Coordinates the sale of property at auction.
  • Testifies in court as required.
  • Processes items through GCIC database.
  • Releases property to owners as appropriate.
  • Audits and inspects items in storage.
  • Overtly displays a positive attitude that sincerely supports and encourages the betterment of the City of Acworth, the citizenry, city officials, supervision, counterparts, and subordinates.
  • Maintains and balance cash; prepares deposits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of chain-of-custody laws.
  • Knowledge of evidence storage and security principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge GCIC/NCIC rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the preservation and documentation of physical evidence.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, analyzing, decision making, and problem solving.
  • Skill in the storage and processing of evidence.
  • Skill in the maintenance of files and records.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Lieutenant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, chain-of-custody requirements, NCIC guidelines, GBI rules, and relevant federal and state laws. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related duties in the maintenance of evidence and property. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to process and store evidence and property. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective evaluation of criminal evidence.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with department personnel, other city employees, crime lab personnel, court personnel, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is performed in an office, stockroom, or warehouse. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain GCIC/NCIC certification.
