Job Description
The Deputy County Attorney position is responsible for providing general legal counsel to County officers and employees, supervising senior assistant county attorneys, managing daily operations of assigned division, and evaluating, reviewing, and managing complex matters.

Essential Duties

  • Supervising senior assistant county attorneys on assigned division 
  • Monitoring and coordinating matters assigned to senior assistant county attorneys and retained outside counsel
  • Providing legal advice to represented clients, department directors, elected officials, and boards and authorities as assigned
  • Attending meetings, researching and assessing legal issues and internal policies and procedures, and providing legal opinions
  • Advising clients on legal solutions and implementing such solutions
  • Reviewing, drafting, and interpreting laws, ordinances, regulations, policies, and resolutions and providing advice, information, and training regarding new and/or amended laws and regulations as needed
  • Representing assigned clients in litigation, in both State and Federal courts, at the trial and appellate levels, to include: meeting with clients and other witnesses; developing case strategy; reviewing and drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs; handling all aspects of discovery, including preparing and responding to written discovery and taking and defending depositions; negotiating settlements and handling mediations; attending hearings (in-person and remotely) and trials; and reviewing and drafting appellate briefs
  • Reviewing, negotiating and drafting contracts and agreements to ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal laws and to protect the County's interest; and providing legal advice regarding contract terms and enforcement thereof
  • Maintaining a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, case law, policies, and procedures; maintaining awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession
  • Participating in training and continuing education activities; attending and conducting meetings, workshops, and seminars as appropriate

Public Speaking Duties

  • Providing training to assigned departments
  • Presenting legal issues to the Board of Commissioners in Executive Session
  • Presenting agenda items

Grade
The grade for this position is 307. Salary will be dependent on education and experience.
 
Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

The County pays for bar dues, court admission fees, and continuing legal education.
 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate AND
  • Ten years of experience practicing law in a public setting, including two years of supervisory experience.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above will also be considered.
  • Member in good standing with the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice in the Superior Courts of Georgia, The Court of Appeals for the State of Georgia and the Georgia Supreme Court.
