Job Summary:

This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the daily care, maintenance, health, quarantine, and disposition of shelter animals. This position will supervise staff and volunteers, maintain facilities and equipment, interact with the public, and ensure that shelter animals receive proper care.   

Major Duties:

  • Oversees Daily Operations of Animal Shelter. 
  • Maintains cleanliness of animal housing and enclosures. 
  • Provides training and lead worker guidance to newer staff and volunteer positions in the more complex aspects of the work, to include medications, treatments, disease identification, specific cleaning protocols, etc. 
  • Performs assessments of shelter animals; cares for sick and injured animals; administers medications; monitors vital signs; changes dressings to wounds. Vaccinates animals at intake, maintains vaccination, deworming, and medication schedules. 
  • Completes Daily Rounds of Shelter Animals. 
  • Feed Animals. 
  • Assists in handling complaints in regard to shelter related service. 
  • Provides assistance to the general public; assists with adoptions, surrenders, and reclaims. 
  • Locates pet owners, traces rabies tags, microchips, ID tags, and tattoos. 
  • Creates and maintains shelter files and animal records. 
  • Updates the Social Media. 
  • Intakes animals. 
  • Participates in the selection of animals for euthanasia and assists with euthanasia as needed. 
  • Locates pet owners who animals are in County custody due to hospitalization, arrest, or otherwise unlivable conditions; informs pet owners on process for reclaiming their animal. 
  • Houses animals for rabies quarantine. 
  • Removes captured animals from traps. 
  • Conducts training for local schools and civic groups. 
  • Maintains and repairs equipment and tools; maintains department facilities. 
  • Trains and leads Volunteers. 
  • Arranges and participates in Offsite Adoptions; recruits and inspects foster homes.
  • Transports animals to rescue groups, partner shelters, and veterinarian. 
  • Temperament tests animals for adoption. Completes animal behavior assessments. 
  • Seeks out new rescue partners and facilitates transfers. 
  • Performs other related duties as required for the efficient operations of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; completion of specialized training preferred.
  • One to three years of experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Georgia.

The successful candidate must pass a Background/Reference Check, and Pre-Employment Drug Screenings prior to the start of employment.
