Listing Summary

The City of Tybee Island is seeking a highly motivated, qualified professional with proven leadership, technical, and administrative skills to serve as the Tybee Island Fire Dept. Chief. The City of Tybee is an island off the coast of Georgia approximately 20 miles from Savannah, Georgia. There are approximately 4,000 residents, but due to the fact that Tybee is a designated Beach Community that number greatly expands to 20,000-30,000 during the spring and summer months.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates city-wide fire services, including fire prevention and suppression and support services, lifeguards, and emergency management.
  • Develops and implements department policies and procedures and enforces City and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Receives applications from volunteer fire fighter candidates and lifeguards, interviews candidates, ensures background checks are performed, and selects new volunteers for the fire department and lifeguards for the City of Tybee.
  • Prepares equipment specifications, oversees maintenance and repair of firefighting apparatus, fire hydrants, and equipment, establishes and plans maintenance program for all apparatus, fire hydrants, and equipment to ensure equipment readiness, and participates in equipment testing activities as required.
  • Evaluates department needs, prepares and presents the annual department budget, monitors expenditures under the current budget, and approves department requisitions. 
  • Reviews and approves department training programs and activities and serves as a fire and safety training instructor.
  • Attends state and national training programs, seminars, conferences, and workshops.
  • Responds to incidents and performs firefighting duties as necessary.
  • Oversees investigation of fire origins and causes, conducts arson investigations, and assesses suspicious fires.
  • Monitors maintenance of existing fire hydrants and determines locations of new hydrants.
  • Monitors on-call personnel schedule to determine if emergency staffing is adequate and adjusts schedule when necessary. 
  • Coordinates and supervises fire service activities with other emergency services during disasters and at fire scenes.
  • Documents all department activities such as responses, equipment testing, staff training, facility inspections, etc. and prepares correspondence, proposals, and various reports.
  • Represents the Fire Department at public functions and makes fire prevention presentations to business, civic, church, school, and government organizations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

  Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field and five (5) years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia.
    • Georgia EMT- I, AEMT, or Paramedic License

Starting Salary:  $122,270 annually
