Permit Technician


Listing Summary


The Permit Technician provides customer service and support to architects, engineers, contractors, and the general public. This position provides technical information related to plan review, building inspection, and permitting services for constructions, development, and project plans as required. This position staffs customer support desk, intakes and digitally routes applications, assists with scheduling, issues permits, and provides administrative support.


  • Operates the permit tracking software platform and conducts procedures related to permit application intake, tracking, scheduling and routing, and calculating fees.
  • Performs the day-to-day customer counter and phone responsibilities of providing development and building information to contractors, design professionals, and the public.
  • Provides information regarding development, permit requirements, housing, code enforcement, building inspection, and related processes at a public counter or on the telephone.
  • Under supervision, applies specific codes, rules, and regulations related to code enforcement and building inspection.
  • Performs technical review of various building and other related permit applications and materials, ensures that the applications and submittals are complete and contain the required information; ensures that contractors possess appropriate insurance and bonding documentation.
  • Reviews and prepares various plan checks over the counter; verifies the accuracy and completeness of information in accordance with division guidelines; assists applicant in completing the permit application process.
  • Functions as liaison and single-point-of-contact for developers with City building services and plan review staff and with other City departments and outside agencies.
  • May serve as permit coordinator for special projects.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned, which includes some field inspections.


Education and Experience:
Minimum one year experience in office or customer service setting.
High school diploma/GED Bachelors degree preferred.
Certified permit technician preferred.
