Applications will be taken at Cleveland City Hall, 85 South Main Street, Cleveland, Georgia, and on the City’s website, 


Employees in this classification perform simi-skilled physical labor in support of the operation, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater facility.  They operate equipment and perform functions with a minimum of supervision within project guidelines established by the lead worker or foreman.  Work is reviewed while in progress or when completed.  Employees are expected to perform job duties outdoors in all types of weather (including inclement weather).


  • Operates a variety of trucks, tractors, loaders, and miscellaneous other equipment to complete assigned tasks.
  • Maintains and repairs pumps and pump motors; assists in maintenance and repair of other mechanical equipment.
  • Assists in the operation of equipment such as pumps, bar screens, clarifiers, digesters, sludge pumps, aerators, chlorinators, and control panels.
  • Makes readings and recordings of temperature, electric meters, and weather conditions.
  • Checks operating equipment for malfunctions; lubricates machinery.
  • Installs and replaces pumps; assists in installation replacement of pipes, valves, and regulators.
  • Performs general maintenance required to keep the working area safe, clean, and neat.
  • Reads, calibrates, replaces charts, and performs routine maintenance on utility system meters and metering stations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections.


  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps and pump motors.
  • Must have or be able to obtain, at the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Class 3 Wastewater Operator License from the State of Georgia.
  • Operation of other miscellaneous heavy equipment such as tractors.
  • Knowledge of mechanics and the operation of sewage treatment plant pumps and pump systems; machinery, equipment, materials, and operating procedures of a modern wastewater treatment facility.
  • Ability to diagnose sewage treatment plant pump system malfunctions and determine appropriate procedures to repair those malfunctions; perform maintenance and repairs to sewage treatment plant mechanical components and equipment, including valves, motors, and control panels.  Work in confined spaces, such as stooping and kneeling for extended periods; read, interpret, and apply information from technical manuals, blueprints, meters, charts, and miscellaneous other written materials.
