The City of Albany, Georgia seeks applicants for the position of Assistant City Manager.

Albany has developed a diversified industrial economy, which includes Proctor & Gamble, MillerCoors, and Mars Chocolate North America. In fact, since 1994, over $800 million has been invested in the community by local industries. Healthcare, education, and the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany are the largest employers. Manufacturing, transportation, tourism, and retail trade are also important foundations of Albany's economy, and the city acts as a center for commerce in southwest Georgia.
Distinguished from the same-named City in New York, Albany, Georgia, is in the heart of South Georgia tourism areas, the southern portion of Georgia's Southern Rivers Region. The City is located on US Highway 82 and covers approximately 57 square miles, flanking both sides of the Flint River. Albany is ideally situated only three hours from the beaches on the east coast and those on the Gulf of Mexico, with Atlanta just 183 miles north and Tallahassee 80 miles south. Lying below the land around Albany is the Floridan Aquifer, an ocean of fresh water that feeds the area's rivers and creeks and fuels its economy.
About the Organization
The City of Albany operates under a Commission/Manager form of government. The Board of City Commissioners is comprised of the Mayor, elected at-large, and six Commissioners representing individual wards, all serving four-year terms with no term limits. The City Commission sets policies, passes ordinances and resolutions, and appoints members to various boards, authorities, and commissions. The Commission appoints a professional City Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization. The Commission also appoints the City Clerk, Assistant City Clerk, City Attorney, Municipal Judge, City Solicitor, and Public Defender. This position reports directly to the City Manager.
The City has approximately 1,067 employees delivering a full range of municipal services, including police, fire, solid waste, public works, transit, community, economic development, planning and development, technology and communications, parks and recreation, finance, human resources, water, and utilities. The annual budget for 2021 is $289.8 million.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will possess a strong ethical compass, an ability to communicate vision as well as the ability to motivate and develop the employees in utility administration. Core skills include financial expertise, including experience with the budgeting process, trend assessment and forecasting; organizational skills with an eye for efficiencies and the role of technology in that process; communication skills (both oral and written); excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for customer service. The successful candidate will oversee portions of the Enterprise Fund, General Fund, and Utility Departments engaged in service delivery, design, inspection, construction, and maintenance of City-owned infrastructure to include Utility functions. The successful applicant will also provide management oversight for the following Departmental functions: Central Services, License & Business Support, Technology and Communications, Marketing and Public Information
Office, Customer Service, Recreation and Parks, Facilities Management, Community & Economic Development, and Fleet Management. The listed departments include one Executive Assistant and nine (9) subordinate Department Directors who supervise a total of 211 employees.
The successful candidate will possess a minimum of a Master's Degree in Public Administration or a related field; or an exceptional combination of education and experience. Marketing and Economic Development experience is a plus.
The City of Albany offers a competitive salary range of $108,199.52 to $185,908.32, depending on education, experience, and training. Additionally, the City offers a retirement plan, including employee contribution and employer matching percentage through the City's Employee Pension Plan, and a voluntary 457 Plan.
