DESCRIPTION

Supervises the activities of the Network and Telecommunications staff. Oversees project implementation, ensures network design. Manages the installation and support of network and communications equipment and hardware peripherals within the guidelines of hardware and software technical manuals, the National and Federal Electrician’s Code Manuals, and departmental policies and procedures. Handling of network infrastructure related escalations from Help Desk team. Reports to the Deputy Chief Information Officer – Infrastructure & Communications or other designated person and works with directors, supervisors, elected officials, co-workers, vendors, consultants and other IT professionals to provide technical support.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the activities of the Network and Telecommunications staff. Evaluates, tests and recommends equipment and software related Network Infrastructure including core switches, edge switches, routers, fiber, etc. Develops, tests and designs network system and maximizes network performance.
  • Coordinates, manages and performs the troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrades, inventory and problem-solving activities on network infrastructure hardware and software, servers, and components. Provides a change control system that will reduce the possibility of network downtime. Works with VMware, SAN, active directory, and windows server.
  • Performs overall vendor management by negotiating access agreements, establishing service level agreements and ensuring contracts are in place to support the services provided by the infrastructure support team.
  • Integrates risk management procedures for communications equipment and system throughout the enterprise. Provides specifications and alternative options regarding Network Infrastructure support options.
  • Provides tactical and strategic input on overall planning of network infrastructure, servers, and telecommunications.
  • Develops the Network and Telecommunications budget requests.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:

  • Provides planning and supervision of Network and Telecommunications staff and projects.
  • Network planning, security, monitoring performance, testing, and providing other Network Administrators with guidance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:    BA/BS in Computer Science, Computer Informational Systems, Business Technology or Information Technology or related technical degree.

Experience:   A minimum of four (4) years in an Infrastructure Supervisor position or relevant technical experience in networking and telecommunications. Must have a minimum of two (2) years of job related supervisory experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

Knowledge (position requirements at entry): 

  • Considerable knowledge of communications technology and concepts, hardware configurations, network communications best practices, software, operating systems, manual systems, applications systems, data communications and networking.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal legal requirements, and County and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in acquiring and maintaining skill sets on new and evolving network, server and communication technologies.
  • Proficiency in translating technical specifications to practical applications.
  • Proficiency in wiring, cabling, data circuit connections, communications electronics, network management, and data communications protocols.
  • Mastery of troubleshooting, problem solving, and operation of tools including sniffers, fiber testers, cable assemblers, and cable activity indicators.

Skills (position requirements at entry):

  • Must possess excellent time management skills and be able to multi-task simultaneous activities, projects, and tasks.
  • Mastery of troubleshooting desktop hardware and software and have demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency in acquiring and maintaining skill sets on new and evolving desktop, printer, software and communication technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team or independently.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team or independently.
  • Must have flexible schedule to perform 24-hour on call duty.
  • Must supervise and/or train designated subordinate personnel

Certification: 

  • CCNA/CCNP preferred

Licensing: Possession of a valid driver’s license with good driving history.  If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.
