Park Maintenance Manager


Listing Summary


This position is responsible for maintaining all recreation facilities and daily maintenance of all park properties and the golf course for the City of Douglasville Parks and Recreation Department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                                                  

  • Plans, prioritizes, supervises and reviews the work of employees involved in grounds/landscaping maintenance of all City of Douglasville parks/amenities, athletic fields, golf course and tennis court facility;
  • Directs all parks grounds and greens maintenance, including landscaping, irrigation, and use of herbicides and other treatments.
  • Responds to department requests for maintenance and determines priorities and assignments;
  • Responds to employee, supervisor and public concerns related to maintenance in a timely manner; maintains a customer service philosophy that is responsive and strives to improve safety, security and accessibility;
  • Maintains a visible profile in the community and with employees through field visits and inspections of golf course/park facilities and equipment, maintenance needs and repairs;
  • Observes the work of staff while in progress to provide technical advice and assistance as needed; provides training to employees;
  • Maintains accurate records of time, material and equipment use;
  • Instructs subordinates in work techniques, use of equipment, and safety precautions and requirements;
  • Facilitates daily work assignment meetings and schedules regular staff meetings as required;
  • Financial Responsibilities: Prepare and/or process purchase orders; obtain bids and make purchasing recommendations per purchasing policy; accountable for inventory/property management; make recommendations that impact the budget; manage the budget within assigned unit/division; manage the budget within assigned department.
  • Coordinates and works with Inmate Crew chief and community service workers. 
  • Plans all maintenance and project work, applying agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long range goals
  • Performs other related duties as necessary.


Requires an Associates’ Degree (Bachelor’s Degree preferred) in Turf Management or a related field and five (5) years of relate work experience.  Experience in park maintenance including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


  • Knowledge of methods, materials, practices, equipment, and tools used in park maintenance work and golf course greens maintenance;
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the work, including the use of restricted pesticides for pre-emergent sterilization and growth control;
  • Knowledge of park maintenance, development and construction;
  • Knowledge of requirements/procedures for building USGA greens.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, discipline and performance evaluation;
  • Knowledge of record keeping principles and procedures;
  • Skill in coordinating the work of others, communicating clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and written;
  • Skill in chemical application for grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Ability to evaluate a problem and identify solutions;
  • Ability to delegate and lead staff in maintaining all park facilities and the golf course successfully
  • Ability to work with considerable independent judgment.


Requires a valid driver’s license, GA Pesticide Applicators license (or ability to obtain GA Pesticide Applicators license within 6 months to a year after taking the position).

  • Ability to obtain a (CPSI) certified playground safety inspector certification within (2) two years to be provided by the employer;


The work is very heavy work and requires balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.


Incumbent works in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.
