JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of this classification is to supervise a shift of officers involved in providing protection of life and property, enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, response to emergency situations, investigation of criminal activity, and specialized duties within an assigned division/unit which may include the Uniformed Patrol Unit, Community Oriented Policing Services Unit (COPS), or other area. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

·Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; participates in recruitment of new employees.

·Coordinates daily work activities; organizes and develops work schedules to ensure adequate coverage.

·Communicates with commanding officers, supervisory personnel of adjoining shifts, other units/divisions, and relays pertinent information to assigned staff; coordinates work activities with those of other units/divisions and law enforcement agencies.

·Enforces all applicable codes and ensures departmental compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations (including traffic, criminal, and civil) to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.

·Conducts roll call briefings to dispense information, training activities, and make patrol assignments.

·Conducts internal/external investigations of misconduct, complaints, accidents involving personnel, vehicles, equipment, research complaints from citizens.

·Reviews/approves reports/documentation completed by assigned personnel to ensure accuracy and completeness.

·Monitors criminal intelligence and trends in criminal activity; retrieves and analyzes crime-related statistical data for use by department personnel, other government agencies, and the public; reports criminal statistics to department management.

·Inspects vehicles, uniforms, weapons, and equipment assigned to shift personnel.

·Monitors radio traffic and responds to calls for service involving officers.

·Assumes command of incident scenes until relieved by commanding officer as needed.

·Supervises and performs patrol of designated areas to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations. Maintains high visibility in the community.

·Prevents/discovers commission of crime, issues citations, summonses, or notices. Apprehends, arrests, and processes criminals or suspects.

·Conducts preliminary investigations of complaints or incidents. Secures crime scenes, processes crime scenes for basic evidence. Prepares detailed reports and sketches as required.

·Participates in investigative/undercover operations involving activities such as monitoring known narcotic areas, infiltrating prostitution rings, or investigating underage alcohol buys; develops informants to obtain information relating to criminal investigations.

·Responds to and performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters.

·Enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, and DUI laws.

·Provides traffic control, crowd control, police protection, or security escorts or other government functions as needed.

·Supervises and performs specialized work associated with Community Oriented Policing. Provides safety and education on school campuses, administers program grant funds and prepares grant documentation. Provides education regarding drug abuse/resistance, gang awareness, or other topics; prepares lesson plans and training materials; delivers presentations at community meetings, and special community events.

·Aids or backup support to other officers, emergency medical providers, fire department personnel, other law enforcement agencies.

·Participates in court activities; responds to court subpoenas; assists in preparing case files and evidence for court presentation; testifies and presents evidence during court.

·Serves arrest warrants, search warrants, subpoenas, or other documentation as needed.

·Transports suspects/arrestees, members of the public, or other individuals as required. Performs public service duties; provides general assistance to the public.

·Inspects/maintains assigned police vehicle, uniform, weapons, or other equipment.

·Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure of employees and other individuals.

·Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, performance evaluations, tickets, or other documents; assists with department purchasing.

·Monitors inventory of department equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.

·Maintains records, logs, and files of work activities.

·Responds to complaints and questions related to law enforcement issues and activities; mediates civil disputes; provides information, research problems, and initiates problem resolution.

·Creates/maintains positive public relations with the general public; maintains and promotes peace and order in the community.

·Attends shift meetings, training sessions, and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations/activities, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; participates in physical fitness training and continuing education activities; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations.

·Supervise asset forfeiture cases department wide for completion and legality.

·Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

·Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; and at least (5) years of law enforcement experience that includes at least 3-5 years of experience/training in narcotics and gangs and/or a combination thereof.

Special Qualifications:          

Eligible to and obtain (within 9 months after date of employment) or in current possession of a valid Georgia Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (P.O.S.T.) certification. Eligible to obtain or in current possession of a valid Georgia driver's license. May require possession and maintenance of valid P.O.S.T. Instructor or Field Training Officer certification.

  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may include ability to count, record counts, and perform basic measuring.
  • Ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. 

·Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.

·Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

·Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.

·Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.

·Visual Acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may be performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, violence, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, or rude/irate customers.
