This position is responsible for writing, designing, and editing marketing materials for city programs. Coordinates media relations and communicates city plans and goals through strategic marketing internally and externally. Creates, develops, and implements communication strategies that strengthen the city’s presence in the community and increases transparency in government operations. Develops and produces content for a wide variety of printed and digital communications, which may include: writing copy for print, web, and television; designing, editing, and producing collateral materials; and attending project meetings to maintain relations. Serves as a central point person for content on the city’s website. Consults with city staff to create, update, revise, and manage web content; perform regular reviews of website pages to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and relevance. Updates communications via newsletters, e-newsletters, videography, and other means to ensure public and internal awareness and understanding of key city initiatives, current projects, and events. Assesses, develops, recommends, and implements programs that will enhance the city’s profile, social media imprint, and reputation. Supervises and participates in media relations activities, which may include: responding to routine inquiries, drafting, editing, and distributing news releases; alerting the media of photo opportunities; identifying and communicating newsworthy stories; and working on-call during emergencies. Drafts articles, reports, and content in other mediums on the status of major initiatives for distribution to the council, the public, staff, and community stakeholders to maximize government transparency. Attends and presents at public meetings on critical city projects and topics. Plans, facilitates, and reviews advertising and public education campaigns for city departments and city council initiatives. Develops creative ideas and proposals for presentation to applicable departments. Participates in planning, coordinating, executing, and evaluating the success of special events for targeted audiences. Assists on event committees and provides direction to employees engaged in providing support at events. Serves as Public Information Officer for the city. Performs related duties.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field; Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with having had a similar position for three to five years; or a combination of education in one of the listed fields and sufficient experience in a similar position that would provide the knowledge to understand the major duties of the position. Comprehensive knowledge of current best practices in public relations, marketing, communication, community relations, and public affairs. Social media experience is required. Must have a working knowledge of all current social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, etc.).Skill in graphic design required. Valid Georgia Driver’s License (Class C or higher) required. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes; Knowledge of municipal government operations; Knowledge of marketing principles and practices to include social media marketing, and event planning methods; Knowledge of digital media formats such as web, television, and video; Knowledge of journalism principles, media relations principles and practices, and proper use of the English language; Skilled in prioritizing, organizing, and managing multiple simultaneous projects; Skilled in preparing clear and concise reports, including oral, written, and audio/visual presentations; Skilled in developing marketing and communication materials; Skilled in applying independent judgment, personal discretion, and resourcefulness in interpreting and applying guidelines; Skilled in gathering and analyzing information and making recommendations based on findings and in support of organizational goals; Skilled in operating computers and related software applications; and Skilled in communicating effectively with a variety of individuals. Attention to detail, able to work under pressure, and willing to work nontraditional hours. Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and manage projects independently. Must be able to work well alone and in a team. Problem-solving skills.

The work is typically performed in both standard office and outdoor environments, with potential exposure to adverse weather conditions. Frequent reaching, sitting, standing, walking, and talking. Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Occasional weekend and evening responsibilities.
