Summary

This is a position with the primary purpose of transporting heavy construction equipment used maintenance and repair of county roads, rights of way, and public works projects. Assists Sanitation Driver in daily bulk waste pick up.

Major Duties

The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Responsible for picking up and transporting of materials, supplies, and tools to the worksite.
  • Responsible for hauling gravel and other road construction material
  • Responsible for the operation of heavy construction equipment used in road maintenance and repair, including blading dirt roads maintained by the county
  • Responsible for repair and maintenance of ditches, potholes, and county rights of way
  • Responsible for the maintenance of assigned equipment
  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of street signs
  • Responsible for flagging and directing traffic in a safe manner, per direction of Crew Leader
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The Heavy Equipment Operator must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts:

  • Ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, and maintain an effective relationship with local officials, county personnel, employees, and the general public
  • Ability to be resourceful and ask questions or seek direction from the appropriate sources when needed
  • Knowledge of the operation of heavy equipment, including the operation of a backhoes, bulldozers, lowboys, chainsaws, mini-excavators, dump trucks and loaders

Training and/or Experience Needed

High school diploma or GED and one year of skilled experience and specialized vocational training; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Possess a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
  • Possess a Valid Commercial driver’s license

Travel

Travel is required within Peach County and regionally as well as being occasionally required for various locations throughout the state for meetings, conferences, and training.

Language Skills

Ability to read and understand written materials. Ability to effectively communicate information to supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in written form in a professional manner in order to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and/or provide service. In addition, this position requires extensive contact with other employees, the general public, and public officials, often involving problem-solving circumstances.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to interpret and understand a variety of forms, reports, manuals, regulations, and other means of instruction and guidance.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position requires medium-to-heavy demands with intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, walking, use of tools or equipment requiring a high level of dexterity, and occasional lifting of medium to heavy weight objects. Additionally, the physical demands required the need to distinguish between shades of colors.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The work environment is primarily performed outdoors in a very noisy place with travel from site to site. It entails exposure to dust, dirt, grease as well as smoke, fumes, and irritating chemicals or toxic conditions. Also, the work environment includes exposure to machinery with moving parts and sharp tools and occasional cold, heat, or inclement weather. In addition, the work requires the operation of vibrating equipment and requires the use of protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, masks, etc.
