We are looking for an Animal Control Director!

The purpose of this classification is to supervise the operations and staff of the animal shelter and animal control; to ensure the safety of the public, staff and animals in the care of the shelter; and to ensure compliance with animal control laws, ordinances and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. 
  • Supervises and monitors a work crew of employees and/or offenders assigned to animal control activities; monitors offender activities to ensure security; instructs offenders on proper work techniques. 
  • Organizes and prioritizes department workload; makes work assignments; creates and distributes work schedules; ensures adequate staff to cover work load; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work. 
  • Enforces the provisions of all applicable animal control codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations; issues warning notices or citations as appropriate. 
  • Manages and supervises the operation and maintenance of the County's Animal Control Program; directs and conducts the apprehension and impounding of stray or vicious animals; supervises subordinates engaged in the feeding, care; ensures and oversees the maintenance and cleaning of the facility, vehicles, and equipment. 
  • Oversees humane euthanasia of animals when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Animal Science or related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in animal welfare, animal control or related field.
  • Candidates may qualify with any equivalent combination of education, training & experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • Must possess and maintain euthanasia certification or obtain within the first year of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain certification as a Correctional Officer or obtain within the first year of employment.
