Part Time Maintenance & Equipment Operator

Listing Summary

The City of Norcross is seeking a Part-Time Maintenance & Equipment Operator to start immediately. This position's purpose is to operate light equipment needed to maintain streets and drainage ditches.

The incumbent in this position will maintain and repair streets and ditches by patching holes and clearing and laying pipe. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining vehicles and light industrial equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with completing reports.
  • Ensure that all the maintenance (i.e., sweeping, trash pickup, limps, etc.) gets completed for the day.
  • Maybe asked to perform maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Maintains and repairs streets by performing such tasks as patching holes with asphalt.
  • Maintains and repairs drainage ditches by performing such tasks as clearing or laying pipe.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment by performing such tasks as checking antifreeze, oil, fuel, and other fluid levels and conditions.
  • Assists with the maintenance of municipal property grounds by performing tasks such as cutting grass, trimming trees, and clearing rights-of-way. Assists with the installation and repair of utility equipment as needed.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED and one to three years of experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must comply with the US Department of Transportation's Part 382 - Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Driver's License for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to pass random drug and alcohol tests.

Any other duties as assigned by the Public Works Supervisor or the Public Works Superintendent

The position has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion.  The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely affect performance. The Incumbent operates independently, but work is verified.  The content of work priorities is determined by supervision. Successful performance helps ensure safe and attractive streets and a positive public image for the city.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of water line repair techniques.
  • Skill in operating a dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, air tools, trenchers, weed eaters, and other heavy equipment.
  • Skill in using standard tools (e.g., shovels, picks, wrenches, etc.).
  • Skill in repairing streets.
  • Skill in operating a dump truck and lawn mower.
  • Skill in following oral directions.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually high.

Salary Range: 17.17 hourly (minimum) up to 22.33 hourly (midpoint) based upon qualifications/experience.
