JOB SUMMARY:
The employee is responsible assisting the Facilities Maintenance Technician in maintaining an assigned park(s) completing work, assuring ball fields are prepared, landscaping and facilities are maintained and repaired. Work involves operating basic small engines such as mowers, line and drag equipment, weed eater, chain saw, blowers, etc. to cut grass, prepare athletic fields, trim, clean fields, grounds and facilities, and to perform other horticultural landscaping tasks. Work includes performing basic painting, carpentry, plumbing, and playground equipment inspection and repair. Sound judgment and initiative is required. Employees must be able to perform manual labor, and abide by safety rules and regulations. All decisions require supervisor's approval. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Park Services Maintenance Leader, and is evaluated through observation of facilities and parks, periodic discussions, and public acceptance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

Performs varied maintenance and repair functions required to maintain park grounds, athletic fields, buildings and equipment; checks park grounds, facilities, equipment etc. regularly and lists required maintenance and repair jobs.

Completes maintenance and/or repair projects in timely manner following safety standards.

Assists in basic level trades repair work (construction, electrical, mechanical, and, plumbing); troubleshoots problems and determines repair needs; installs and repairs irrigation system; repairs broken plumbing pipes and leaks; replaces faucets, commode handles, and tank systems, sink/flush valves; installs and replaces outlets and light sockets.

Repairs equipment such as mowers, tractors, tillers, weed-eaters; replaces bearing, changes blades and tires on mowers; changes shaft, plugs and heads on weed-eaters.

Performs grounds maintenance duties including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, fertilizes, plants and spreads seed and lime.

Cleans park buildings, including restrooms, and picks up trash, and empties trashcans on grounds.

Performs maintenance, construction, and repair duties on recreational facilities such as dug outs, concessions, playgrounds, fences, bridges, picnic areas, and other recreational areas; checks equipment for safety; paints; and repairs plumbing.

Drags, lines, and paints ball fields and levels dirt infields and base lines; operates UTV with drag and field maintenance attachments.

May be required to perform maintenance on roads in park.

Applies various chemicals in the performance of landscaping duties.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:


All candidates to fill a vacant position in this classification must submit to and pass a drug-screening test after meeting the following minimum requirements:

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; and,
Two years of progressively responsible related experience; or,
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid State Driver’s License.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in the parks and recreation maintenance.
Working knowledge of work hazards, related liabilities, and applicable safety standards and County standards
Skill in operation of assigned equipment and tools, mowers, drags, chain saws, etc.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
Ability to exercise courtesy and tact when dealing with the public.
