Senior Long-Range Planner

Job Description
The Planning Division is responsible for long-range planning, zoning administration, and GIS mapping. The division prepares and presents staff findings, including written case reports and recommendations, to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Commission, and Board of Commissioners. The division also manages local area planning and community engagement initiatives. The Senior Long-Range Planner position is within the Department’s Planning Division and will report to the Long-Range Planning Manager. 


Essential Duties

  • Monitors the implementation of the County’s Comprehensive Plan, the 2040 Unified;
  • Manages local amendments and five-year updates to the 2040 Unified Plan and Community Work Program (CWP);
  • Represents the County on the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Land Use Coordination Committee (LUCC);
  • Pursues funding from the ARC for new Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) planning areas and supportive studies including Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP) funding;
  • Performs and manages complex professional planning projects, research, and analysis;
  • Communicates with other County Departments and outside agencies;
  • Attends meetings with residents, developers, design professionals, and others;
  • Develops public engagement strategies that maximize community involvement in planning projects, reduces barriers to participation, and meaningfully engages with under-represented groups;
  • Completes special planning projects related to community planning, economic and community development planning, redevelopment planning, comprehensive land use planning, etc.;
  • Completes project scopes of work, budgets, and timelines for major projects completed by in-house staff and professional consultants;
  • Prepares and submits grant applications for funding to complete long range planning studies;
  • Develops collaborative relationships with planning partners including the ARC, Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), and the Council for Quality Growth; 
  • Conducts other special projects including master planning, research and analysis of planning and zoning-related topics; community engagement and education and others; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Grade
The grade for this position is C43(1).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Planning or related field
  • Four years of planning experience
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position

Preferred Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Planning, or related field
  • Five years of planning experience
  • Experience managing the creation and update of comprehensive plans, Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) plans, and other master planning projects
  • AICP certification.
