POSITION SUMMARY

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with general maintenance, repair, landscaping, and grounds keeping of parks and recreation facilities. Reports to the Parks & Recreation Director.

 

SCHEDULE: Normal operation hours: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (schedule flexibility is available to accommodate the needs of the city

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance, inspection, and repair work of City parks and recreation facilities.

Maintains athletic fields and related facilities and playground equipment for recreational facilities.

Maintains parks facilities such as restrooms, concession stands, picnic shelters, and other recreation and park areas; collects and disposes of trash and debris on City Park property.

Installs, maintains, and replaces playground equipment and fences; assembles tables, benches, and bleachers.

Performs ground maintenance to include mowing grass, blowing leaves, pruning or trimming vegetation, pulling weeds, spraying or applying herbicide and fertilizer, loading trimmings onto truck, picking up trash and blowing or sweeping debris off parking lots and sidewalks, and assist with snow removal as season dictates.

Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition.

Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, timecards, maintenance reports, spray records, and other documents.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by two (2) years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

 

Licenses or Certifications

State of Georgia Driver’s License.

Special Requirements

Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and an acceptable driving record. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of building and park maintenance methods and practices.

Knowledge of, or ability to learn, standard cleaning methods, turf grass maintenance practices, and operation of equipment used in park maintenance.

Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.

Skill in ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Skill in operating specialized cleaning equipment (e.g., buffer, carpet shampoo machine, vacuum cleaner, cleaning equipment, etc.) and various hand tools.

Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures, and standards

Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action. 

Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Ability to identify and eradicate disease or insect damage to plants and turf. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK CONDITIONS

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
