The City of Lawrenceville was established in 1821 and serves as the county seat of Gwinnett County, Georgia. It is a suburb of Atlanta, located approximately 30 miles northeast of downtown. The population of Lawrenceville is approximately 30,834.  The City of Lawrenceville is governed by a council-manager form of government.  The City Council determines the city policies, and the City Manager is then responsible for city operations and execution of the set policies. 

The City of Lawrenceville seeks a dedicated professional that is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the position in a diverse and growing community.  The new City Engineer must possess superior management skills particularly in the areas of project and fiscal management.  The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate strong departmental leadership and have a passionate commitment to serving the citizens of Lawrenceville.  The candidate must demonstrate the ability to be grounded in engineering practice (private development and transportation) while providing implementable solutions.  The City Engineer will develop long-range plans, oversee the management of capital and stormwater projects, and manage the department’s budget and expenditures.  Additionally, the candidate should be a professional who is a dedicated team player who can quickly gain the confidence of the department and must have the ability to build trust through the development of partnerships.   The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to embrace change and help guide the community through new challenges.  The City Engineer must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills and have the ability to assist the Public Works Director in articulating a vision and developing consensus around engineering issues and concerns.  The candidate must be a proven leader with the ability to function as an integral part of the Public Works team under the direction of the Public Works Manager.

Candidate Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, public administration, project management or a closely related field, with a Master's degree preferred. 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a related-engineering field; or equivalent training, education, and/or experience required
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) is required.  Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desired.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Georgia Driver’s License within 30 days of hire 

The expected starting salary range for this position is $111,000 - $145,000 (depending on qualifications of the selected candidate), with a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance options.  City provides employer paid short-term disability, long-term disability, accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) and life insurance that pays two times the employee’s annual salary.  The retirement plan is a 401(a) with City contributions and a 457 deferred compensation plan, paid time off, and negotiable relocation expenses.
