General Nature of Work

The purpose of this classification is to plan, develop, implement, and manage the operations and activities of the Smith-Gilbert Gardens.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Develops, plans, and implements long and short-term goals and objectives for the Gardens to include policies and procedures for effective operations and maintenance; recommends changes in order to meet organizational needs.
  • Prioritizes and oversees garden development, fundraising, programming and related activities; identifies new processes and alternatives to resolve problems or enhance operations.
  • Ensures proper upkeep and preservation of gardens and facilities with regular inspections; adheres to safety standards and documents training, and personnel follows all requirements.
  • Works with the facilities manager, staff, groups, and contractors to determine needed repairs, work activities, and/or upgrades.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public regarding Gardens services; represents the Gardens at meetings, conferences, in the media, and with other outlets.
  • Provides information or directs inquiries to appropriate department resources; meets with civic groups, foundations, corporations and other organizations; prepares and presents information regarding Gardens operations, special campaigns, and programs.
  • Supervises staff; processes employee concerns and issues, directs work, counsels/disciplines and completes employee feedback and performance appraisals.
  • Advances Gardens fundraising and programming; coordinates the publication, and distribution of marketing materials; serves as the primary membership and fundraising leader, solicits financial support and donations to the Gardens; writes grants, develops funding initiatives, and aligns goals with the City for the sustainability of the Foundation.
  • Continues to refine all aspects of public communications with the communication & engagement manager to include web presence, digital/print/social media, and external relations to ensure a strong brand and awareness.
  • Creates and executes departmental budget, including capital improvement needs and monitors expenditures to ensure compliance; approves all department purchase orders and requisitions.
  • Prepares various forms, reports, correspondence, charts, agenda items, articles, presentations, grant documentation, project proposals, policies and procedures, and performance appraisals.
  • Receives various budget statements, time sheets, event and safety reports, project updates, proposals, and manuals; processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, regulations; conducts research and maintains an awareness of new issues, methods, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; participates in continuing education activities; attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Has knowledge of and operates an office computer along with other appropriate software to complete essential job functions.

 

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Serves as Executive Director for the Smith-Gilbert Gardens Foundation; facilitates meetings; oversees budgets and expenditures; provides executive level administrative support.  Performs other related duties as required.

Data Utilization:  Requires the ability to synthesize, hypothesize, and/or theorize concerning data involving modification of existing policies, strategies and/or methods to meet unique or unusual conditions. Requires the ability to do so within the context of existing organizational theories and management principles.

Human Interaction:  Requires the ability to function in a managerial capacity for a division or organizational unit.  Includes the ability to make decisions on procedural and technical levels.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization:  Requires the ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to perform moderately complex algebraic and geometric operations; ability to utilize principles of basic probability and statistical inference.

Functional Reasoning:  Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning:  Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving broader aspects of organizational programs and operations, moderately unstable situations, or the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree in Horticulture, Museum Studies, Science or related field; supplemented by 10 year(s) of progressively responsible management experience in garden operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but that may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of lightweight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Work Environment: Performs essential functions regularly without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
