Listing Summary

The Automotive Technician I is responsible for the inspection, repairs and maintenance of city-owned vehicles and equipment. This position is responsible for some fabrication and welding work related to the repair of vehicles. 

 

SCHEDULE: Normal operation hours: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as: power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brakes, steering, hydraulics; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on all city owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Inventories stock, places orders, verifies receipts.
  • Works with vehicle operators to identify issues
  • Maintains vehicle records up to date by recording services and repairs
  • Maintains safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations
  • Tracks, stores, inspects or properly disposes of hazardous materials on site
  • Responsible for repairs on minor body damage
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High school or GED; supplemented by three (3) years of automotive repair experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid State of Georgia driver’s license; G1 ASE Certifications or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment; Series ASE certification of ability to obtain within two (2) years of employment

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Special Requirements -

 This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Knowledge of safety practices in the use of hand tools, equipment and supplies used in repair and maintenance of motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines
  • Ability to read mechanical and automotive blueprints, diagrams and manuals
  • Ability to disassemble, repair, and assemble engines and parts
  • Ability to communicate with vehicle and equipment users and other mechanics about required repairs
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effective in English in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, tact and excellent customer service
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in automotive/equipment components or systems and make minor and major repairs.
  • Ability to prepare paperwork for records and data entry.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and customers.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK CONDITIONS

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.  Tasks require the ability to communicate orally. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a shop environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, odors, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents or toxic agents.
