Job Summary: This position is responsible for skilled, licensed work in the operation and maintenance of equipment in water treatment/pretreatment plants. Work involves the operation of water treatment facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with discharge permits. This position is also responsible for preventative maintenance of plant equipment. Incumbents in this classification are fully qualified plant operators responsible for the efficient operation of wastewater and/or water treatment equipment on an assigned shift. Major Duties & Responsibilities:
 Operates and maintains equipment such as pumps, motors, chemical feed systems, laboratory and other equipment.
 Determines necessary adjustments to chemical dosages; maintains compliance with permit limits.
 Detects improper operation of equipment and reports need for repair.
 Collects samples, monitors, and analyzes lab test data and records test results.
 Takes daily meter readings for monthly reports.
 Replaces chlorine cylinders and regulates the flow of chlorine.
 Fills chemical containers in lab and for the wells and fills chemicals at reservoir.
 Calculates ppm on all feed chemicals.
 Logs data into computer system.
 Maintains Plant and Plant grounds; mows lawn, uses weed eaters and other lawn maintenance equipment; fuels trucks and equipment and needed.
 Maintains work area which could include such tasks as cleaning and calibrating testing equipment, cleaning chemical rooms, particle counters, countertops, glassware, dishes, sweeping, and mopping floors and other related cleaning duties.
 Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
 Operates air compressors and other electrical equipment;
 Conducts a variety of lab tests.
 Mix chemicals and keeps chemical feeders full.
 Operates departmental vehicle(s) in the performance of duties.
 Assists with other departments as requested and needed.
 Performs related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
 Knowledge of all Federal, State and local safety practices and procedures pertaining to Water Plant operation.
 Knowledge of chemical application in the treatment/pretreatment practices and procedures.
 Knowledge of laboratory analysis for process control.
 Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
 Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
 Skill in or and written communication.
 Skill in planning and meeting deadlines.
 Skill in compiling and analyzing data.
 Ability to detect flaws and defects in the operation of treatment equipment and initiate proper corrective actions.
 Ability to prepare and maintain reports.
 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and
 the general public.
 Ability to ascend and descend vertically in distances up to 25 feet.
 Ability to lift up to fifty pounds.
 Ability to use a phone.
 Ability to drive standard equipped vehicles and to navigate uneven terrain.
 Ability to read and interpret charts, graphs and gauges.
 Ability to tolerate environments containing dust, dirt, grease, smoke, fumes and potential hazards.


Education & Certification(s):
 High school diploma or GED equivalent.
 Two (2) years’ experience or training in the field of water treatment plant operation or water chemistry preferred.
 Must obtain Class III Water & Confined Space Entry licenses within one (1) year; equivalent combination of education and experience.
 Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License & acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
 Ability to successfully pass a criminal & credit background check.

 Ability to work with limited supervision and follow directions.
 Ability to work well with co-workers and the general public.


Physical Requirements:
 The work requires intermittent periods of sitting, standing and walking.
 When collecting samples, operating/repairing equipment and changing chemical systems, the incumbent is required to climb stairs and ladders, reach over equipment to make adjustments, turn large valves, climb into confined areas, lift objects weighing over 50 pounds and use tools requiring a high degree of dexterity.
 The incumbent must be able to distinguish between shades of color when performing laboratory analysis.


Environmental Conditions:
 Water plant environment.
 Some exposure to dust and noise, heavy lifting, standing, walking climbing and at heights.
 Work in inclement weather conditions and also may include work in confined spaces.
