This position is responsible for the planning, administering, and directing the county’s fire and emergency management operations. This position plans and implements long and short-term department goals and priorities; including station construction, apparatus and equipment purchases, new job classifications and staffing increases. Position ensures fire management activities and initiatives conform with County Administration directives and the County’s vision, direction and mission for future services to the community. Provides advisement and assistance directly to senior management in all aspects of the County’s fire operations.
Directs, monitors and reviews the activities of the Inspection, Training, Operations EMA and Administrative Divisions.
Oversees the daily activities of the department including managing, planning, coordinating,administering and evaluating programs, projects, processes, procedures and servicesoffered; ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations, codes andstandards.
Prepares the annual department budget and monitors expenditures with approved funds. Develops and implements department policies and procedures.
Responds to requests for information and provides subject-matter-expert guidance to other departments, County Administration, senior management, the general public and/or outside agencies; briefs the Board of Commissioners on agenda items.
Knowledge required: fire prevention, suppression, and investigation standards, practices, strategies, tactics and apparatus. National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) standards. Knowledge of occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards. Pertinent federal fire codes, state and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience (four years of experience as a Battalion Chief or higher preferred). Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act. Required certifications must be current and in good standing.
Position is non-Civil Service Department Head, subject to Chairman’s nomination and BOC’s confirmation; serves at the pleasure of the BOC. Salary range $112-557.71-171,269.86 commensurate with experience, qualifications, etc. and includes comprehensive benefits package.
