Facilities Maintenance Technician


Summary

The City of Covington is currently accepting applications for the position of Facilities Maintenance Technician in the Facilities Maintenance Department with a starting hourly rate of $20.68 to a maximum hourly rate of $30.37 depending upon qualifications. Qualified applicants MUST apply via our website by downloading an application packet at cityofcovington.org or may apply in person at the City of Covington, 2194 Emory Street, Covington, Georgia 30014. GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance of City-owned and/or maintained facilities including buildings, parks, and trails.  Works under the close supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager.  The Facilities Maintenance Manager can delegate this supervision of this position to the Senior Maintenance Technician as needed or desired. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs general janitorial services for City-owned facilities including cleaning restrooms, cleaning spills, sweeping, mopping, and other related duties.
  • Inspect the exterior of City Hall to ensure the removal of debris or trash.
  • Dumps trashcans at City-owned parks and facilities and relines cans with liner.
  • Inspects trails for maintenance and/or concerns and notifies Facilities Maintenance Supervisor of any issues
  • Trail and park maintenance including leaf/debris removal, trash removal, chemical spraying, and signage maintenance.
  • Clean and Set up the Court Room and Council Room as needed for varying events. 
  • Manage janitorial supply stock to ensure needed items are always in stock
  • Water plants and trees at City-owned facilities as needed or directed
  • Change light bulbs and fluorescent bulbs.
  • Open, close, and lock City-owned facilities as needed or directed.
  • Assist Senior Maintenance Technician with remodeling and other construction projects as needed.
  • Use a leaf blower safely

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent;

            (B) Ability to read and write English;

  Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities;
  • Skill in the operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public;
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess at least a valid Georgia State Driver's License.  Must have a good driving record for the last 3 years to be insurable by the City’s insurance.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Hammer, hand tools, voltmeter, shovel vacuum, mops, broom, dusting equipment leaf blower, water hose and any other equipment related to building maintenance.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals.  The employee is occasionally exposed to the risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate but can be loud during times of operating small motor equipment.
