JOB SUMMARY

This position is a full-time, P.O.S.T. certified deputy operating under the direction of the Candler County Sheriff’s Office with a primary function of supporting code enforcement in Candler County. This position exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous and/or unusual situations, exercising approved operating procedures of the Sheriff’s Office and county. Works under stressful, high-risk situations. This position reports to the Candler County Sheriff or his designee.

MAJOR DUTIES

· Code Enforcement

  • Patrols an assigned district in a patrol vehicle on assignment for the purpose of observing the area for possible violations of the Candler County code of ordinances which may endanger the health and well-being of the citizens of Candler County, Georgia;
  • Responds to requests for service from the Candler County Board of Commissioners to: (a) investigate specific reports of violations and follows up on investigations if necessary;
  • Provides county support and response to reports of animal control issues as reported by the Candler County Sheriff, Candler County Board of Commissioners or residents;
  • Other such duties as are requested and/or required by the Candler County Board of Commissioners

· Sheriff Deputy

  • Provides support to patrol deputies and Candler County Sheriff command staff as requested or required;
  • Investigates and reports accidents, dangerous, defective or hazardous conditions;
  • Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims, and gathers physical evidence and preserves for court; conducts follow up investigations as needed;
  • Enforces all felony and misdemeanor laws of Georgia;
  • Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers as needed;
  • Serves as a witness in court and provides evidence in court as required;
  • Responds to emergency calls, such as robberies, burglaries, assaults and other crimes, and adheres to standard operating procedures and safety protocols in answering and responding to calls for service;
  • Assists and provides law enforcement services as required and directed by the Candler County Sheriff or his designee.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned by the Candler County Sheriff

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST)
  • Knowledge of the laws of the State of Georgia, Candler County and the surrounds
  • Knowledge of the Candler County code of ordinances
  • Knowledge of radio communications.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement equipment use and safety protocols
  • Knowledge of the standard operating procedures and safety protocols of the Candler County Sheriff’s Office
  • Knowledge of county streets and geography of the assigned regions.
  • Knowledge of state and federal requirements.
  • Knowledge of county policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position reports to the Candler County Sheriff or his designee. Work assignments may be assigned by the County Administrator or Zoning Administrator for investigation or enforcement of county ordinances.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the laws of the State of Georgia, the Candler County Sheriff’s Office operating and safety guidelines and policies, the Candler County Board of Commissioners policies and procedures and the Candler County code of ordinances.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of varied code enforcement and law enforcement duties. The necessity of responding to unforeseen emergencies contributes to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to provide (1) code enforcement, and (2) law enforcement duties within Candler County, Georgia.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk, in a patrol vehicle or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, stooping or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

The work is performed in an office, outdoors and at emergency scenes. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, vests, firearms, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be a citizens of the United States
  • Must not have any felony convictions. Conviction of certain misdemeanor offenses may deem applicant ineligible for employment.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive character and background check
  • Must successfully pass a medical exam and drug screen
  • Must successfully pass a psychological evaluation
  • Certified applicants must be in good standing with Georgia POST, with no history of suspensions, revocations, or open investigations. Closed POST investigations will be reviewed for impacts to eligibility.
  • Non-certified applicants must meet requirements to obtain and maintain Georgia POST certification
  • Must possess a valid Georgia driver’s license with a goo driver’s history
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job; and, must not have a pattern of illegal drug use or abuse of prescription drugs;
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time, lift more than 50 pounds, and perform other physical activities within the job duties

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
