What You’ll Do
Depending on experience and level, you'll take on a variety of exciting responsibilities to help plan, design, and maintain a safer and more efficient transportation system.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
- Conducting traffic engineering studies, crash analyses, and operational assessments
- Designing and reviewing traffic control, striping, and signage plans
- Supporting or managing the City's Traffic Calming and Intersection Safety Programs
- Leading or assisting with the city’s goal to eliminate serious traffic crashes by 2040
- Preparing technical reports and presenting recommendations to city officials and the public
- Responding to inquiries and feedback from citizens, elected officials, and city departments
- Supporting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), special event planning, and construction detours
- Managing or supporting data collection efforts including speed studies, turning movement counts, and field investigations
Work Schedule
- Standard Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
- Rotational on-call support is required, including occasional nights, holidays, and special events
Minimum Qualifications
Traffic Engineer I
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation/Traffic focus preferred)
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
Traffic Engineer II
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation/Traffic)
- Minimum 3 years of experience (Master’s degree may count as 2 years)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Georgia
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Experience with Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, SimTraffic, AutoTurn, and GIS
- Familiarity with MUTCD standards and GDOT design processes
- Strong skills in AutoCAD/Civil 3D, Microsoft Office, and traffic data analysis
- Ability to manage projects, perform technical writing, and present findings clearly
- GA SWCC Level 1B Certification (or ability to obtain within 1 year)
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) training
- Roadway Safety Professional (RSP) or Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certifications (for Traffic Engineer II)

What to Know
- Positions require the ability to work both in the office and in the field under various weather conditions
- Physical requirements include lifting up to 20 lbs. and extended periods at a computer
- A background check and drug screening are required for all final candidates
- This is a full-time exempt position and reports to the Traffic/Transportation Unit Manager
- Salary Range:$80,784.67 To $120,237.48 Annually
