JOB SUMMARY
The person filling this position must be a self-starter, energetic, and imaginative with a high degree of ethics, honesty, integrity and personal maturity. This position is responsible for facilitating an active relationship with hotels/restaurants & attractions in the Covington/Newton County area. Work involves marketing Covington/Newton County to stimulate economic development and promote tourism. Collaborates with the Downtown Coordinator on the mutual goal of promoting tourism in Covington/Newton County.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Extensive contact with the public, and with local and state officials. Frequent contact with news media. Contact is evenly distributed between personal, written and vocal means.
• Identify projects and reinvent public spaces to create economic development and quality-of-life initiatives through the Georgia Placemaking Collaborative
• Provides information to the Mayor and Council relative to the department's areas of responsibility and expertise.
• Ensure the City’s Calendar of Events is successfully executed and promoted.
• Provide ideas, recommendations and solutions to merchants in the Downtown District.
• Represents the City at various functions and serves in capacities as directed by the Mayor, Council and City Manager.
• Oversees all filming, event permitting and road closures in the City. Communicate impacts to merchants, residents and film crews.
• Create community partnerships in an effort to enhance quality of life for residents.
• Assists Department Director in managing communications to citizens, elected officials and businesses.
• Develops a strategic approach to promoting tourism in the Covington area;
• Serves as the primary marketing professional to promote the Covington area for tourism and visitor purposes;
• Develops new tourism products that strengthen and market Covington as a destination for tourists and businesses;
• Makes presentations in support of the Covington Tourism Program;
• Develop relationships with national, international and regional tourism-based publications, writers and tour operators;
• Design, develop and conduct familiarization tours for media, event planning, tour operators and travel writers;
• Build campaigns and stories to enhance the marketability of Covington/Newton County and promote attractions & community events to visitors;
• Host visiting film scouts for prospective filming opportunities;
• Assists Covington businesses, Newton County agencies and other partners enhance their marketing efforts;
• Attend Tourism related conferences and events
• Initiates the development of marketing materials, brochures and programs; works with creative teams to develop advertising and other public relations material.
• Conducts research on available grant funding; helps prepare grant applications; monitors department expenditures to ensure compliance with adopted budget.

• Highly effective team building and leadership skills including consensus-building to resolve conflicts, negotiate agreements and gain cooperation among competing interest groups.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
(A) Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Economics, Business Administration, Planning, Public Relations, Community Development, or other course of study related to Tourism/Marketing. Master’s Degree preferred.
(B) Supplemented by three (3) years of experience with tourism, event promoting/planning, community development, business marketing or related field(s).
(C) Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
